Title character Beau is portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, who lives in a futuristic American urban center, where law and order has broken down, and hope seems gone. At the same time, he is planning a trip to see his mother (Patti Lupone), but several situations prevent that from happening. When a tragedy occurs, he becomes more motivated then ever to get back to Mommy, but not without some other intense obstacles to overcome.
