Tribeca2024: Films at Tribeca Fest Contain Themes of Transitions

HollywoodChicago.com RSS Feed - June 12, 2024 - 9:00am

NEW YORK – It’s the middle of the 23rd Tribeca Film Festival and the narrative feature films … with an emphasis on the independent … are in competition. Themes of transition are strong in this year’s line-up, as story tellers have emerged from the pandemic years, and the reflections thereafter.

The 2024 Tribeca Festival, presented by Web3 tech company OKX, brings artists and diverse audiences together to celebrate storytelling in all its forms, including film, TV, VR, gaming, music, and online work. With strong roots in independent film, Tribeca is a platform for creative expression and immersive entertainment.

Capsule Reviews, 2024 Tribeca Film Festival

Adult Best Friends At 32 years old, two female best friends are going in different directions … one toward marriage/domesticity and one desiring to keep the familiar party going. Can there friendship survive?

CAPSULE REVIEW: This dramatic confrontation is also achingly funny. The two lead actors, Delaney Buffet (also director) and Katie Corwin co-wrote the screenplay, and have a natural rhythm to their movie relationship. This film is highly relatable, either to persons within that transition age group, or to those of us who have been there and done that. What was notable was how human the characters were, making themselves vulnerable within and around the transitioning relationship. Even Zachary Quinto in a small role gets some laughs and heart.

Boys Go To Jupiter An animated film set in the in the period between Christmas and New Year’s, it follows the adventures of Billy 5000 (Jack Corbett), a teenage gig worker with a rise-and-grind mindset whose quest to make $5,000 is derailed by the appearance of a gelatinous little dude from outer space.

CAPSULE REVIEW: From cartoonist/animator Julian Glander, this unique style and story is notable as much for its distinct character and character voices, giving heart to the modern mendacities of current society, including Billy’s ability to hack into his delivery app and switch currencies to heighten his pay. The side story about an evil hybrid juice company is less subtle, but the interactions between the teen delivery man, his gang, and a space alien that the company wants to capture is fine entertainment, visually compelling and yet another example of the golden age of animation.

Bitterroot How about being a thirtysomething Asian immigrant man who is divorced, jobless and living with his mother … and part of a superstitious Hmong language community in Montana? It’s conflict upon conflict upon transitioning.

CAPSULE REVIEW: This World Premiere from director Vera Brunner-Sung is resonate in that place between the old country tradition and new home calamity. Set in the beautiful and sometimes terrifying wild fire country of Montana, the symbolism is within the setting as the Hmong man is beset with demons and an aging mother, who represents everything he’s trying to escape. A fascinating character study and a dive into the mystery of the forces that are behind the development of who we are.

Brats Remember the infamous “Brat Pack” from the 1980s … the main members being Andrew McCarthy, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy, Molly Ringwald and Judd Nelson, among others? Well, Andrew McCarthy decided to make a documentary on how that “grouping” affected them.

CAPSULE REVIEW: This film is for everybody who went through the era, for these group of then 20something actors defined so much of their lifetimes. What is remarkable about the doc is that it’s not so much a look back, but a perspective from now older and wiser people on what it all meant. There is some highlighted philosophy from Demi Moore, of all people, and Rob Lowe. Yet it is Andrew McCarthy who most seems to be benefitting, and finding a sense of representative peace. This one took me by surprise, and is a must see for again the transitions. Streaming on HULU beginning Friday, June 14th.

Podtalk: Alex Thompson & Kelly O’Sullivan on Their Film ‘Ghostlight’

HollywoodChicago.com RSS Feed - June 11, 2024 - 10:14am

CHICAGO – Two of the finest filmmakers who have roots in Chicago (college) are Alex Thompson and Kelly O’Sullivan. After Kelly wrote the acclaimed “Saint Frances” with Alex directing, their second film is a co-directing effort that is a brilliant meditation on finding one’s self after loss, and doing it through … acting.

Dan (Keith Kupferer) is a middle-aged construction worker grieving a family tragedy, and has cut himself off from his devoted wife Sharon (Tara Mallen) and talented but troubled daughter Daisy (Katherine Mallen Kupferer), Through an accidental circumstance, Dan finds comfort and community in a misfit company of amateur actors. While performing for the first time in a low-rent production of a Shakespeare’s most famous tragedy, Dan is forced to confront his buried emotions.

Kelly O’Sullivan and Alex Thompson are up-and-upward cinema creators, Kelly a noted actor/writer and Alex a director of visual and auteur-style sensitivity. Besides being the lead role/writing the sublime and beautiful “Saint Frances” … which partially was about abortion, but not in the way anybody would think … Ms. O’Sullivan has appeared in the notable Chicago indie “Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party,” the festival favorite “Cha Cha Real Smooth” and “Hangdog.” Alex Thompson has also directed a horror-thriller film he wrote with this brother, “Rounding.”

In Part One of a Podtalk with Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com, Filmmakers Kelly O’Sullivan and Alex Thompson talk themes in writing, of acting and a pause to reverse the curse of the “Scottish Play” …

In Part Two, on nuts/bolts of filmmaking, the creative life and “Saint Frances” …

In Part Three, the perils of Googling one’s self, the big screen and storytelling …

”Ghostlight” is in theaters on June 14th, including Chicago’s Music Box. Featuring Keith Kupferer, Katherine Mallen Kupferer, Tara Mallen, Dolly De Leon, Dexter Zollicofer and H.B. Ward. Written by Kelly O’Sullivan. Directed by Alex Thompson and Kelly O’Sullivan. Rated “R”

Theater Review: Raven Theatre’s ‘The Prodigal Daughter’ is HerStory

HollywoodChicago.com RSS Feed - June 9, 2024 - 10:41am

CHICAGO – One of the open secrets of Chicago is its horrible racist past, which remains like an echo. Playwright Joshua Allen has been exploring this theme in his Grand Boulevard Trilogy – the last chapter talking place during the infamous 1919 race riots – in Raven Theatre’s “The Prodigal Daughter.” For tickets and info, click TPD.

While the riots are taking place outside their home, the Bass family … widower John (Bradford Stevens) and youngest daughter Daisy (Sol Fuller) and Aunt Lottie (RJW Mays) … are hunkering in their home on Chicago’s Grand Boulevard, when a surprise return takes place from oldest daughter Virginia (Stephanie Mattos), who has a white companion name George (Stef Brundage). They are traveling vacuum cleaner sales reps, and Virginia returns home to show off her job and presumably her man. This causes issues with an old lover, Rev Maxwell (Bryant Hayes), and the ingredients are in place for a tense reunion. Meanwhile, the riots’ wolf is outside their door.

Exclusive Portrait: Al Roker at 60th Chicago Intl Film Festival Gala

HollywoodChicago.com RSS Feed - June 8, 2024 - 10:02am

CHICAGO – I have a new appreciation for Al Roker. Already acknowledged as a famous weatherman and TV host, the “Today Show” staple can add raucous comedian to his resume, as indicated by his hosting duties at the 60th Chicago International Film Festival’s Summer Gala on June 1st, 2024. He killed, as they say.

Albert Lincoln Roker was born in Queens, and got his B.A. in Communications from the State University of New York in Oswego. His first weatherman gig was in Syracuse, New York, while in college and he started his main career in Washington, D.C. After stops in Cleveland and local affiliate in New York City, he found himself substituting at the national level on NBC, first with the Sunrise show and then with the “Today Show.”

With his personality and appearances on “Late Night with David Letterman,” Roker became the permanent “Today Show” weather anchor in 1996, replacing Willard Scott. From that time to the present, Roker has become America’s genial uncle, adding hosting duties with “3rd Hour Today,” covering the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade every year, and doing various TV jobs such as game shows, cooking shows and even a syndicated radio weather report. In 2018, he made his debut as a Broadway actor when he portrayed Joe in the musical “Waitress.”

Exclusive Portraits: John C. Reilly at 60th Chicago Intl Film Festival Gala

HollywoodChicago.com RSS Feed - June 7, 2024 - 1:16pm

CHICAGO – You’ll never hear a better speech about the actor’s gratitude for his hometown than John C. Reilly’s proclamation at the 60th Chicago International Film Festival’s Summer Gala on June 1st, 2024. He brought the house down with emotional and passionate words about his journey that began in the Windy City.

With an astonishing range of roles already under his belt, John C. Reilly has played an eclectic host of rich characters to great effect over the years, from seedy ne’er-do-wells to lovable and good-natured schlepps. The fifth of six children, John Christopher Reilly was born in Chicago, and was brought up on Chicago’s Southwest Side. On the amateur stage from age eight, Reilly trained at the Goodman School of Drama and eventually became a member of Chicago’s renowned Steppenwolf Theatre.

His film break came with a small role in the Vietnam War drama “Casualties of War” (1989). Reilly gained momentum throughout the 1990s and in films as ”Days of Thunder” (1990), ”Shadows and Fog” (1991), ”What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” (1993) and ”The River Wild” (1994). He became a major player in director Paul Thomas Anderson’s films, in ”Hard Eight” (1996), ”Boogie Nights” (1997) and in ”Magnolia” (1999). He went on to earn further critical points for his role of the soldier sent to the front lines in Terrence Malick’s war epic ”The Thin Red Line” (1998).

Reilly in the 2002 included high-profile parts in ”The Hours” (2002), ”The Good Girl” (2002), ”Gangs of New York” (2002), and especially ”Chicago” (2002) as “Mr. Cellophane,” Amos Hart, for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He also kept his toe on the stage, with Steppenwolf’s “A Streetcar Named Desire” and a musical version of “Marty.”

In the next phase of the millennium, Reilly took on and ”The Aviator” (2004) and “We Need to Talk About Kevin” (2011), as well as broad comic turns in as the lead in ”Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story” (2007), and with Will Ferrell in ”Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” (2006) and “Step Brothers” (2008), in addition to an absurdist turn in “Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie” (2012). His VoiceOver role in “Wreck-It Ralph” (2012) and its sequel is iconic, and most recently he was featured in “Kong: Skull Island” (2017), “Licorice Pizza” (2021) and the miniseries “Winning Time: The Rise of the Laker’s Dynasty” (2022-23).

Film Review: ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ on the Road to Nowhere

HollywoodChicago.com RSS Feed - June 6, 2024 - 9:15am

CHICAGO –“Bad Boys: Ride Or Die,” the fourth in this series, is a big budget clunker that’s clearing coasting on fumes. A wheezy Martin Lawrence, and a post-slap Will Smith, are trying to recapture some of their former box office glory by trying to milk their still considerable chemistry for all its worth. The best that can be said is that it’s less of an interminable slog than I thought it would be.

Rating: 2.5/5.0

The plot … such as it is … has their foul mouthed deceased captain Howard (Joe Pantoliano) being framed for being a mixed-up-with-drug-cartels dirty cop. However he sends them videotaped messages from beyond the grave detailing his own investigation to root out the dirty cops. This leads to the Bad Boys being on the run and framed for crimes they didn’t commit.

”Bad Boys: Ride or Die” is in theaters June 7th. Featuring Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, Vanessa Hudgens, Tiffany Haddish and Joe Pantoliano. Written by Chris Bremner and Will Beall. Directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. Rated “R”

CHICAGO – Happy Pride Month 2024! One of the most beautiful and spirited LGBTQ+ films on the festival circuit last year was “The Mattachine Family,” written by Danny Vallentine and directed by his husband Andy Vallentine. Andy Vallentine talked to HollywoodChicago.com about his film that was partially autobiographical. “The Mattachine Family is now available to rent on all major streaming platforms.

“The Mattachine Family” features the very-much-in-love married couple Thomas (Nico Tortorella) and Oscar (Juan Pablo Di Pace) in a story about family, both made and found. When their foster child reunites with his birth mother, Thomas and Oscar deal with the loss in very different ways, and realize they have differing ideas on what makes a family. Loosely based on director/writer Andy Vallentine and writer Danny Vallentine’s own lived experiences as husbands and potential fathers, the film is a journey on the universality of love, family, and community.

Music Review, Slideshow: Judah & the Lion at Chicago’s Northerly Island

HollywoodChicago.com RSS Feed - June 5, 2024 - 4:30pm
| Image 1 of 5 | Judah Akers of Judah and the Lion.

CHICAGO – On a dark and overcast night in Chicago, Judah & the Lion took the stage after an extended rain delay at Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island, radiating charisma and positive energy. HollywoodChicago.com’s Music Editor and photographer Jeff Doles was there to capture the action and cover the performance.

Judah & the Lion, an alt-folk band from Nashville, Tennessee, was formed in 2011. They have released four studio albums and five EPs. The band currently consists of Judah Akers (vocals, guitar), Brian Macdonald (mandolin, vocals) and Nate Zuercher (banjo). The band released their fifth studio album, “The Process,” on Friday, May 10th, 2024. Akers, as the lead singer and main songwriter, endured a series of devastating events, including the loss of family members to suicide and a divorce from his wife, all within approximately six months. Overwhelmed and numb, Judah turned to music for healing.

Judah & the Lion’s songs blend folk, rock, and hip-hop, and their live performances are infused with positivity through crowd interaction, choreographed dancing, and an upbeat style and energy, and that was all evident at the Chicago show. Their banjo-picking is high-energy. passionate and uplifting, with songs that are as heartfelt live as they are on the radio.

Their recent 19-track album is a soul-baring song cycle that grapples with the five stages of grief – Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance – ultimately finding beauty and purpose within the pain. Named iHeart’s Best New Alternative Artist in 2019, Judah & the Lion’s debut album went platinum, and their last record reached the Top 20 on the Billboard Album charts. Their song “Take It All Back” held the Number One spot on the alternative chart for over a month. Podtalk: Programmer Kyle Cubr on ‘Godzilla vs. Music Box (Theatre)’ from June 7-13, 2024

HollywoodChicago.com RSS Feed - June 4, 2024 - 12:04pm

CHICAGO – Run for your lives, Chicago, or run to the historic Music Box Theatre for “Godzilla vs. Music Box,” an unprecedented mega-festival celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the World’s Most Famous Reptile. Besides presented by the Music Box and the Japanese Arts Foundation, GvMB is programmed and curated by Kyle Cubr, Music Box Senior Operations Manager by day, Godzilla Enthusiast through at all other times. The series unspools from June 7th-13th, 2024, for schedule, tickets and details, click GvMB for tickets/details.

Godzilla is a prehistoric and reptilian “kaiju” (monster), awakened and empowered after many years by nuclear radiation. With the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki still fresh in the Japanese consciousness, Godzilla was conceived as a metaphor for nuclear weapons, among other metaphors (as Kyle explains in the Podtalk below). The selection of films reflects the international and iconic pop culture status of the “King of the Monsters,” who has appeared in 33 Japanese films produced by Japan’s Toho Studios, five American films, and numerous video games, novels, comic books, and television shows. It’s good to be the King.

Dr. Miyamoto is a professor at DePaul University whose work focuses on nuclear ethics and the cultural aftermath of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Other highlights include a 24 hour marathon of all 15 “Showa-Era” (1954-75) on Saturday, June 8th, and a Godzilla Y2K-era double feature on Sunday the 9th. “Destroy All Monsters” (1968) has a special screening is on Monday, June 10, introduced by legendary horror host SVENGOOLIE, who will also be signing autographs in the Music Box Lounge from 5:30-7:30pm. Podtalk: A. Ashley Hoff on ‘With Love, Mommie Dearest’ Event at Chicago's Music Box, June 4, 2024

HollywoodChicago.com RSS Feed - June 2, 2024 - 10:13am

CHICAGO – “With Love, Mommie Dearest” is a new book by A. Ashley Hoff, chronicling the making of the camp classic. Chicago’s Music Box Theatre will screen “Mommie Dearest” and Hoff will sign his new book on June 4, 2024. Click CRAWFORD for tickets/details.

The 1981 film “Mommie Dearest” has a place in cultural history, and author A. Ashley Hoff decided to do a deep dive into the history of the film in his new book (the subtitle is “The Making of an Unintentional Camp Classic”). The story of this only-in-show-business happening starts with its production history, culminating in the film’s release – anticipated with studio backing and awards consideration prestige – only to devolve quickly after early screenings.

When Paramount Studios understood that audiences were reacting with laughter to the extreme nature of the melodrama … adapted from a best-selling book by Christina Crawford, about the relationship with her movie-star mother Joan Crawford … the company quickly shifted the marketing to emphasis this somewhat gleeful camp value, and the angle cemented its cult status. “No wire hangers!”

The plot of “Mommie Dearest” features Joan Crawford (Faye Dunaway, in a performance that can best be described as histrionic) adopting Christina (Mara Hobel as child, Diana Scarwid as adult) and raising her under a iron fist, which included psychological and – as depicted in the film – physical abuse. The arc of their mother/daughter dynamic, from childhood to Christina’s acting career, contains a number of confrontations that pushed the boundaries of dramatic taste to the level of weird hilarity.

A. Ashley Hoff looks at this funhouse mirror of the movie “Mommie Dearest” through the hows and whys of the making and its aftermath as camp. He is also the author of “Match Game 101: A Backstage History of Match Game” and “My Huckleberry Friend: Holly Golightly and the Untold History of Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” He previously worked for talent agencies in Chicago and Los Angeles, and has written articles on Hollywood history for The Advocate and Films in Review.

In Part One of a Podtalk with Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com, author A. Ashley Hoff starts our journey down the rabbit hole with “With Love, Mommie Dearest: The Making of an Unintentional Camp Classic” …

In Part Two, regarding director Frank Perry, Faye Dunaway and Joan Crawford of “Mommie Dearest” …

In Part Three, no wire hangers and Hoff’s favorite line of dialogue …

In a video clip, A. Ashley Hoff gives the deets for his appearance at the Music Box Theatre on June 4th for the “Mommie Dearest” event …

A. Ashley Hoff appears on behalf of his new book “With Love, Mommie Dearest: The Making of an Unintentional Camp Classic” … available wherever books are sold … with a screening and book signing at Chicago’s Music Box Theatre on June 4th, 2024 (7pm).

Podtalk: Christian Taylor on ‘The Girl Who Wore Freedom' for D-Day 80th Thru June 9, 2024

HollywoodChicago.com RSS Feed - June 1, 2024 - 9:10am

CHICAGO – “The Girl Who Wore Freedom,” a documentary created by filmmaker Christian Taylor, is a film that speaks not only of the celebration of France’s appreciation for the Allies liberation of the country in World War II (beginning with D-Day), but also of the remembrance that this vital story evokes every June 6th, as in 2024 with the D-Day 80th Anniversary. The documentary will be on 300 screens across the U.S. from now through June 9th. Chicago area screenings are through Classic Cinemas (see end of article below). For a complete map of all U.S. screenings, click TheGirlWhoWoreFreedom.com.

The genesis of the documentary centers on an obscure story, which would have been lost to time if not for its discovery by the filmmaker. Danielle Patrix was a little girl in 1944 during the World War II liberation of France that occurred after D-Day, and in honor of the Allied troops – but especially the U.S. soldiers – her mother made her a red, white and blue American outfit out of discarded parachutes. Her story led to another, as Taylor contrasts the French remembrance with interviews of U.S. WWII veterans who participated in the liberation.

The creative force behind the doc is Christian Taylor, who lives in the Chicago area, and is a longtime entertainment veteran known for her voiceover work, but also as a hybrid of producer, director, casting director, coach and talent. She got her BA in Theater and Broadcasting from The Catholic University, while at the same time starting her career working in the Senate Building in their TV/Radio department, interviewing the power brokers of the era. “The Girl Who Wore Freedom” is her first film as director, co-writer and producer.

In Part One of a Podtalk with Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com, filmmaker Christian Taylor talks origins and themes in “The Girl Who Wore Freedom” …

In Part Two, the war inside France and the filmmaker’s passion to bring the documentary to completion …

Trailer, “The Girl Who Wore Freedom” …

“The Girl Who Wore Freedom” commemorates the 80th Anniversary of D-Day with special screenings throughout the U.S. through June 9th, 2024, including Chicago and Illinois area screenings at Classic Cinemas Oak Park, Carpentersville, St. Charles, Oswego and Kankakee. He is an American actor, comedian, writer, director, producer AND puppeteer, known for his SNL ”TV Funhouse” cartoon shorts (the “Ambiguously Gay Duo”) and the voice behind Triumph the Insult Comic Dog.
