The main purpose of trash is back up. Before being completely deleted, files go first to your trash. This is the back up system for Mac. It stays in the trash until you decide to clean up your trash. For files you have accidentally deleted, trash is very helpful.

Though trash files are supposed to be deleted, they still take up space in your hard drive. Spaces on your Mac can probably still be used for other important files.
