::spoiler alert::
From the start, I felt nothing for the main character. Nothing. He didn’t impress me, in fact, he seemed a little off-putting. But then again, I’m not at one with the British society elite.
Then Tom walked in. I would much rather watch a movie about Tom’s antics than anything that ole what’s-his-face did, even if it was murder.
I understand that Woody’s movies are stylized. I know that he interjects odd humor bits (see: trying to get the shotgun put together). I know that he has a sort of glass half empty take. But I just didn’t like this movie.
The plot twist at the end was interesting, but it left too many stones unturned. It tied together too quickly. It was like they said, “Oh shoot - we only have a few minutes left before this becomes as long as a Peter Jackson movie … better wrap things up!” It left a lot of things unexplained. Too many questions. But really, none that I gave a hoot about answering because, again, I didn’t feel anything towards the main character. I didn’t feel any sympathy. I didn’t feel anything for Scarlett’s character either.
Woody, give me the story about how Nola & Tom got pregnant & had the abortion. Give me the story about why Tom is drinking all the time, dealing with an incredibly judgmental mother. Give me ANYTHING, but give me an engaging character/actor like Tom/Matthew Goode.
I wouldn’t see this movie again, I wouldn’t recommend it, I wouldn’t rent it on video, & I’d probably only watch it if it came on television just to see the parts with Tom, because he’s so charismatic, he steals the movie.
In a word: Eh.
