DVD Review: ‘Sam Kinison Unleashed’ Brings Comic Genius to DVD
Submitted by BrianTT on January 27, 2009 - 10:29amDVD Rating: 3.5/5.0 |
CHICAGO – Anyone who has ever seen a Sam Kinison stand-up special knows the truth. The man was a genius. Finally, people unfamiliar with the mad preacher will get to see for themselves and those of us old enough to remember Kinison’s all-too-brief time in the spotlight can revisit this inspirational and hilarious comedian on DVD with “Sam Kinison Unleashed”.
DVD Round Up, Jan. 27, 2009: ‘Moonlight,’ ‘College,’ ‘City of Ember’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 27, 2009 - 10:19amCHICAGO – We apologize to the people behind these four titles but the star power is a little dim in this edition of HollywoodChicago.com’s DVD Round Up. When a canceled vampire series is arguably the biggest release in a four-pack of titles, it’s a weird edition of the Round Up. Prepare yourself.
DVD Review: Social Realism of ‘El Norte’ Resonates With Criterion Release
Submitted by BrianTT on January 26, 2009 - 10:03amDVD Rating: 4.0/5.0 |
CHICAGO – Gregory Bava’s “El Norte” is a riveting commentary on the impact of the American dream on the rest of the world. It’s easily one of the best films produced about the complex struggle of immigration and a great way to kick off 2009 for The Criterion Collection.
DVD, Blu-Ray Round Up, Jan. 20, 2009: ‘Henry Poole is Here,’ ‘The Pink Panther,’ ‘King Kong’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 20, 2009 - 5:05pmCHICAGO – This week’s edition of the Round-Up - HollywoodChicago’s recurring feature of titles that might fall through the cracks if we don’t shine a spotlight on them, however briefly - includes proof that while not all remakes fail some certainly do, Chris Rock is still the most talented stand-up comedian alive, and the Brits usually do TV better than Americans.
DVD Review: Catch Current Season of ‘Battlestar Galactica’ Before Mid-Season Premiere
Submitted by BrianTT on January 14, 2009 - 5:31pmDVD Rating: 4.0/5.0 |
CHICAGO – “Battlestar Galactica” returns to the Sci-Fi Channel on January 16th, 2009, at 9pm CST for the final arc of episodes of the beloved series. There’s still time to catch up with season 4.0 before the mid-season premiere of 4.5 in an excellent TV set from Universal.
DVD, Blu-Ray Round Up, Jan. 13, 2009: ‘My Best Friend’s Girl,’ ‘My Bloody Valentine,’ ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 13, 2009 - 7:10pmCHICAGO – Audrey Hepburn and Dane Cook. You won’t find that kind of variety too many places outside of HollywoodChicago’s DVD & Blu-Ray Round-Up. From serial killers to musicals to a British import, this week’s round-up features an exciting variety of titles.
DVD Review: New Version of ‘Brideshead Revisited’ Worth a Look
Submitted by BrianTT on January 12, 2009 - 5:17pmCHICAGO – The BBC mini-series adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s “Brideshead Revisited” is so beloved that the new version with Matthew Goode, Hayley Atwell, Ben Whishaw, Emma Thompson, and Michael Gambon was doomed from the beginning. Miramax has done the filmmakers a disservice by releasing their work only on standard DVD, but fans of period pieces or classic literature should give Julian Jarrold’s film a chance.
DVD Review: Bumpy Ride to ‘Appaloosa’ is Worth the Trip
Submitted by BrianTT on January 9, 2009 - 2:32pmCHICAGO – I expect “Appaloosa” to be one of the more hard-to-get movies at your local video stores for the next few months. It’s the kind of movie - action-driven and widely missed in theaters - that does very well on the home market. Renters will find an old-fashioned Western that may not transcend its genre but will certainly provide more than enough entertainment on a snowy winter’s eve.
DVD, Blu-Ray Round Up, Jan. 7, 2009: ‘Bangkok Dangerous,’ ‘Disaster Movie,’ ‘Friday Night Lights,’ ‘Towelhead’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 7, 2009 - 12:51pmCHICAGO – The time has come for another round-up, a collection of DVD and Blu-Ray titles that may have missed the front page in the Best Buy circular but that might be worth your attention.
