Best Actress favorite Marion Cotillard will play the girlfriend of John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) in Michael Mann’s “Public Enemies,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

An adaptation of Brian Burrough’s book “Public Enemies: America’s Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-43,” the story follows the government’s attempt to stop the criminals John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd. Depp is playing Dillinger to [Christian] Bale’s famed FBI agent Melvin Purvis.

Cotillard will play Billie, Dillinger’s torch singer girlfriend.

Mann, Ronan Bennett and Ann Biderman wrote the script.

Production is due to start later this winter in Chicago and other Midwest locales.

Variety adds that Channing Tatum, Giovanni Ribisi, Stephen Dorff and Jason Clarke are also joining the cast.

Tatum will play outlaw Pretty Boy Floyd, Ribisi will play Alvin Karpis, Dorff is near a deal to play Homer Van Meter, and Clarke will play John “Red” Hamilton. That quartet repped a Dillinger gang that knocked off banks all over the Midwest during the Depression.

Michael Ortiz

MTV Movie Blog has a story about Michael Ortiz, who’s been cast in “Public Enemies.”

“I’m playing Frank Nitti, who’s a Sicilian gangster,” Ortiz said of the man they called “The Enforcer,” portrayed by Bruce Gordon in “The Untouchables” TV show, Sylvester Stallone in the 1975 movie “Capone,” Stanley Tucci in “Road to Perdition,” and tossed from a roof by Kevin Costner in 1987’s “Untouchables” movie.

In real life, Nitti served as the right-hand man for Al Capone during his heyday, only to eventually go to prison and then commit suicide after his release. “He was already kind of established,” Ortiz said of the timeline in which “Public Enemies” will depict Nitti.
