CHICAGO – There are people who made it who probably think that the real-world controversy around Trayvon Martin, which forced the film to abandon its original title of “Neighborhood Watch,” is what undid “The Watch” with Ben Stiller & Vince Vaughn, one of the biggest bombs of Summer 2012. The fact is that this comedy would be a miss no matter what was going on in the world. It’s not as disastrous as some critics would have you believe as there are more laughs than your average recent Adam Sandler or Eddie Murphy films and the supporting cast, notably Richard Ayoade and Rosemarie Dewitt, is pretty funny, but it’s a definite disappointment.

The movie jumps back and forth in terms of tone and never builds up enough speed while also often playing into the worst, laziest tendencies of Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn. However, if you’re a big fan of either falling star or the two rising ones in the supporting cast, it’s a reasonably diverting rental. You could do a whole lot better but you could also do worse than you may have heard.
