Blu-ray Review: Teen Comedy ‘Fun Size’ Doesn’t Fit Anyone
CHICAGO – “Fun Size” is such a weird, weird movie. Who was it made for? It bears the Nickelodeon label but also a PG-13 rating and enough suggestive humor that it could never air uncut on the network. Perhaps the clear fact that no one ever figured out its audience is why it never found one, grossing less than any Nick movie to date and opening in 10th place. You may be curious now that it’s on Blu-ray and DVD. Just rent one of the films this work so clearly mimics instead.
Rating: 2.0/5.0 |
If “Fun Size” was just awful, that would be one thing. There are plenty of horrendous teen-driven comedies. It’s not that bad. There are a number of talented performers here and debut film director Josh Schwartz has done enough great work on TV that he knows how to pace a comedy scene. A bit where the characters get stuck on the crowded strip in their town as their radio is stuck on a very loud Josh Groban is pretty funny but goes on way too long. And nothing in “Fun Size” links together. It feels episodic in ways that the ’80s comedies that it’s mimicking never did. And the jokes that don’t work, REALLY don’t work. Talented young actresses like the good Victoria Justice (“Victorious”) and the great Jane Levy (“Suburgatory” and the upcoming “Evil Dead”) will get past this misfire quickly. You should too.
Fun Size was released on Blu-ray and DVD on February 19, 2013
