CHICAGO – The 2013 49th Annual Chicago International Film Festival has launched a new category of awards, honoring the depth and variety of LGBTQ themed films from around the world. The first awards ceremony took place on October 21st, and the first Gold Q Hugo was given to the Taiwanese film, “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?”

The evening was moderated by Chicago Sun-Times entertainment columnist Bill Zwecker. The winner of the Gold Q Hugo, “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?” (Director: Arvin Chen) is a celebration of life’s true meaning, and the ability to recognize and act upon it. The Silver Q Hugo went to “It’s All So Quiet” (Director: Nanouk Leopold), which tells a relatable story of desire, frustration and independence. A Special Jury prize went to the stunning documentary about homeless gay teens, “American Vagabond” (Director: Suzanne Helke).

The evening also paid special tribute to Scud, a cult Chinese director bringing his third film to the Chicago International Film Festival. His passionate and erotic explorations of emotion and sexuality are banned in his own country of origin – his journey is remarkable, his films more so. Festival Founder and Artistic Director Michael Kutza conducted a revealing interview with Scud, as he presented him with the honor.

When asked about his remarkable journey in life, Scud said, “People has asked me, what is the point of being gay? I feel that the gods create gay people because they reckon the world needs some artists.”
