CHICAGO – One of the most famous bow tie stylists in the world, and one of the greatest advocates for understanding our universe is Bill Nye, “The Science Guy.” He used that nickname in the 1990s, when he hosted a popular kids TV show with that title. He was at the Barnes & Noble book store at Old Orchard in Skokie, Ill., to promote his new book, “Unstoppable: Harnessing Science to Change the World.”

William Stanford “Bill” Nye was born in Washington, D.C., and graduated from Cornell University with a mechanical engineering degree in the late 1970s. After stints at Boeing Corporation and as a consultant in the aeronautics industry, he also did sketch comedy in Seattle, where he gained the nickname doing some science demonstrations as part of the show. This led to appearances on “Back to the Future: The Animated Series,” which in turn got him “Bill Nye the Science Guy,” part of PBS Kids from 1993 to 1998. His uniform on the TV show was a lab coat and his now signature bow tie.

Nye has taken his brand and expanded it to books, other TV shows, science advocacy and he even holds several U.S. patents. His latest book, “Unstoppable: Harnessing Science to Change the World,” is about using science to improve our environment – Nye has lectured considerably on the topic of climate change. In 2013, he took a turn on “Dancing with the Stars,” only to be eliminated on third episode due to injury. He continues to be an educator, scientist and performer, and recently launched his own bow tie line, which contributes a percentage of the sales to the Planetary Society.
