“Norjmaa” is directed by Bayaneruull – who was nominated for a Golden Rooster – and is set during World War II. A female Mongolian sheep herder named Norjmaa finds two injured soldiers, one Japanese and one Russian. She takes them in, and begins the healing process with traditional Mongolian medicine. As they get stronger, they move toward their original mission – to kill each other as enemy combatants. With three different languages, and her own war wounds of the past, Norjmaa is challenged on several fronts.

The Asian Pop-Up Cinema series – founded by Chicago film program veteran Sophia Wong Boccio – is a revolving showcase of diverse Asian films, with China, Hong Kong, Inner Mongolia, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Tibet and Vietnam all represented for the 2017 Spring Season, in films with English subtitles. Screenings occur at the AMC River East 21 in downtown Chicago, the Wilmette Theatre in Wilmette, Illinois, and various locations (including free screenings). “Norjmaa” will also have a one week run at the Wilmette Theatre starting on April 14th. Season Four of the Asian Pop-Up Cinema series presents the Chicago premiere of “Norjmaa” on Wednesday, April 12th, 2017 (7pm), at AMC River East 21, 322 East Illinois Street, Chicago, with Tsogtbayer Namsrai of Mongol Films appearing on behalf of the film. • Speech & Debate (stage play)

CHICAGO – “Speech & Debate,” the latest production from the mighty Brown Paper Box Company, continues their tradition of thinking outside that “box” in presenting storefront theater that makes a statement and a difference. “Speech” goes inside America by showcasing the outsiders… those who create art because they can’t get it right in real life. This non-equity Chicago stage play premiere is finely tuned and wonderfully acted, and runs through March 4th, 2018. Click here for more details, including ticket information.

  • We're Gonna Be Okay

CHICAGO – The 1960s were a time of historical social transition. The movements – civil rights, feminist, gay rights – all had roots in that tumultuous decade. The Chicago premiere of Basil Kreimendahl’s “We’re Gonna Be Okay” echoes all of those movements in its characters, and collides them against the October 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. The show has a Thursday-Sunday run at the American Theater Company through March 4th, 2018. Click here for more details, including ticket information.
