CHICAGO – Even though Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway appeared once again to present the Best Picture at the 90th Academy Awards – as they did last year – the correct film was announced, and it was the romantic fantasy “The Shape of Water” that won the 2018 Best Picture on March 4, 2018.

The beautiful film and story of “The Shape of Water” broke the awards season attention towards “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” to take the top prize. Guillermo Del Toro also won Best Director for the film, and it also took Best Original Score and Best Production Design. The four best performance Oscars played out as predicted by previous awards season honors. Sam Rockwell (“Three Billboards…”) won Best Supporting Actor, Allison Janney (“I, Tonya”) won Best Supporting Actress, Gary Oldman (“Darkest Hour”) won Best Actor, and Frances McDormand (“Three Billboards…”) won Best Actress, and delivered a fiery speech addressing the issue of Hollywood’s inequitable treatment and harassment of women in the film business.

The show, hosted again by Jimmy Kimmel, had his usual control and killer one liners. The main bit involved going into a movie theater audience with some big Oscar participants, handing out candy and hot dogs to a preview audience for “A Wrinkle in Time,” in appreciation of movie audiences everywhere. He also had a field day with the oldest acting nominee in history, 88-year-old Christopher Plummer of “All the Money in the World,” joking that he had been a kid actor at the first Oscars, 90 years previously. While Plummer didn’t win, 89-year-old James Ivory – of the notable [Ismail] Merchant-Ivory film production team – won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for “Call Me By Your Name.” He is the oldest person ever to receive a competitive Oscar.
