Podtalk: Sophia Wong Boccio on Season Seven for Chicago’s Asian Pop-Up Cinema

CHICAGO – With three years and six seasons behind her, Sophia Wong Boccio has established the Asian Pop-Up Cinema as a Chicago film happening. Season Seven begins on September 12th, 2018. For more information, click here.

Sophia Wong Boccio is a veteran in Chicago cinema, beginning with the Chicago International Film Festival, where she was Managing Director for seven years. She began Asian Pop-Up Cinema (APUC) in 2015, splitting Spring and Fall in separate “seasons.” Through determination and tenacity, Sophia has built APUC into not only a cultural event, but as a films series which brings a quality perspective on universal issues and experiences. It just didn’t start with the recent “Crazy Rich Asians,” but Sophia appreciates its influence on Asian films and APUC.

Season Seven of APUC, which runs from September 12th through November 14th, 2018, will highlight films from South Korea, the Philippines, China, Thailand, India, Hong Kong, Japan, Tibet, Vietnam and Taiwan. The Opening Night film is the North American premiere of “Adulthood,” with appearances by director Kim In-seon and star Lee Jae-in. Spotlight presentations occur at the AMC River East 21 in downtown Chicago, with other various locations for special events, in addition to a number of free screenings.
