Blu-Ray Review: Woody Allen’s ‘You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger’
Submitted by mattmovieman on March 3, 2011 - 2:16pmCHICAGO – “My relationship with death remains the same. I’m strongly against it,” mused Woody Allen at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, during the press conference for his latest London-set comedy. The quote was quintessential Allen, though it had a particular poignance in light of his disappointing yet diverting offering, “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger.”
DVD Review: ‘The City of Your Final Destination’ Fails Spectacular Cast
Submitted by BrianTT on August 17, 2010 - 2:23pmCHICAGO – It’s unlikely that there will be a more A-list cast in a more frustrating film this entire year than on display in “The City of Your Final Destination.” Not only does it include a reunion of the great director James Ivory with star Anthony Hopkins (who appeared in the director’s “Howards End” and “Remains of the Day”) but it features two of my favorite actresses alive, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Laura Linney. And yet, the only word I can think of to describe the film is “disappointing.”
Blu-Ray Review: Spectacular Release For Superior Version of ‘The Wolfman’
Submitted by BrianTT on June 6, 2010 - 8:34pmCHICAGO – A great Blu-ray can come from the most unexpected places. Who would have guessed that the relatively disappointing “The Wolfman” with Benicio Del Toro, Emily Blunt, and Anthony Hopkins would result in one of the best Blu-ray releases of the year to date? With a superior version of the film, perfect HD, and amazing special features, this is a spectacular release.
‘City of Your Final Destination’ Isn’t Worth a Visit
Submitted by BrianTT on June 1, 2010 - 10:25amRating: 1.5/5.0 |
CHICAGO – Although “City of Your Final Destination” is not the latest installment of the Rube Goldberg-inspired splatter series, it does seem to be populated with the walking dead. The only similarity shared between the “Final Destination” franchise and this picturesque drama is an overwhelming abundance of tedium, generated by a plot that often seems as stagnant as its listless characters.
‘The Wolfman’ With Benicio Del Toro Misses By a Hair
Submitted by BrianTT on February 14, 2010 - 2:04pmRating: 2.5/5.0 |
CHICAGO – Joe Johnston’s “The Wolfman” nearly works. The Benicio Del Toro vehicle has a strong supporting cast, a few striking visual compositions, and at least one must-see sequence, but it misses the mark as a complete film, never quite as compelling or entertaining as it could or should have been.
