DVD Review: Clever, Fun First Season of British Hit ‘Misfits’

Misfits

CHICAGO – I had been hearing for years about how smart and fun the British drama/sci-fi/comedy show “Misfits” was but I still had my doubts. Sometimes when a show comes with a bit too much hype, it can more easily disappoint. There’s nothing disappointing about “Misfits,” a show that’s constantly surprising, smart, and fun. The only disappointment is that we only have the first season on DVD and not the other three…yet.

Blu-ray Review: Excellent Set For ‘Doctor Who: The Complete Sixth Series’

Doctor Who 2011

CHICAGO – The sixth season of “Doctor Who” made the biggest waves stateside, in no small part due to a marketing blitz tied into the fact that the program was, for the first time, premiering in the U.S. at the same time it was in the U.K. (For years, the series would air in its home country and be imported later.) It also became a very divisive season. Do a Twitter search and you’ll find ecstatic love and pure hatred for this season.

DVD Review: BBC’s ‘Upstairs, Downstairs’ Makes Triumphant Return

Upstairs, Downstairs

CHICAGO – The original “Upstairs, Downstairs” series became such an international phenomenon that the title has become a well-known phrase. How many programs have become so culturally relevant that their name can be used apart from them in order to describe a social or cultural situation? Very few. “Upstairs, Downstairs” returned for Christmas 2010 in the U.K.(and aired here on PBS recently as a part of “Masterpiece Theatre”) and now the three hour-long episodes are available in a two-disc set from BBC and Warner Bros.
