DVD Review: Forget Remake; Check Out Original ‘The Stepfather’

The Stepfather

CHICAGO – I could be wrong, but my love for the 1986 original and the lack of critic screenings for the remake opening today leads me to feel confident in saying that the DVD of the original “The Stepfather,” available on the format for the first time this week, is the way to go this weekend if you’re looking for a nasty slice of domestic terror.

THEATER, TV, DVD & BLU-RAY REVIEWS

  • Clash Of The Titans Blu-Ray

CHICAGO – The Winter Olympics coverage on NBC made it impossible for viewers to ignore the fact that there is indeed a “Clash of the Titans” remake coming out in April. This may seem redundant, since the vast majority of modern fantasy has in some way ripped off Greek mythology. Both “Harry Potter” and “Percy Jackson” include a variation on Medusa, the reptilian villain with snake hair and a stoney stare.

  • The Private Lives of Pippa Lee DVD

CHICAGO – Is there anything more damaging to an actor’s performance than a Botox needle? It’s heartbreaking to see faces that were once so expressive become stiff and embalmed. Robin Wright is living proof that a naturally older appearance is infinitely preferable to a synthetically younger one. Her face has only gotten better with age, and has rarely been used to more mesmerizing effect than in “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee.”
