Comedian Jim Gaffigan for his book, ‘Dad is Fat.’

CHICAGO – Just in time for Father’s Day, comedian Jim Gaffigan has written a new book about his adventures in Papa-hood, entitled “Dad is Fat.” The hilarious observational comic, known for his riffs on America’s food habits (“Hot Pockets”), takes on the rigors and rites of fatherhood as only he can.

TV Review: Comedy Central’s Funny ‘Key & Peele’ Deserves Bigger Audience

Key and Peele

CHICAGO – More people need to watch “Key & Peele,” one of the more consistently funny programs on TV right now. As with all sketch comedy, it’s not without its duds, but the batting average here is so much higher than the average comedy that the misses are easier to take. Stars Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele are talented and smart enough that their show often approaches the genius of the best in sketch comedy like “Chappelle’s Show” and “Mr. Show.” Yes, it’s that good.

TV Review: Comedy Central’s Raunchy, Ridiculous ‘Workaholics’ Returns For Third Season

CHICAGO – “Workaholics” has seriously grown on me. Oh, it’s still amazingly stupid TV but I have to admit that I was surpised at how much I welcomed the return of three man-children who Beavis and Butthead would probably fire. Only “Workaholics” could start their third season with an episode called “The Business Trip” and make it about a bad acid “trip.” Hallucinate with “Workaholics” and start your Summer right.

DVD Review: Hysterical Stand-up of ‘Patton Oswalt: Finest Hour’

Patton Oswalt Finest Hour

CHICAGO – Patton Oswalt is one of the funniest stand-up comedians alive. You may not know the name but you almost certainly know who he is. He’s had such a diverse career, including scene-stealing work on TV (“King of Queens”), the lead role in a beloved Pixar film (“Ratatouille”), great indie flicks (“Big Fan”), cable series (“The United States of Tara”), and even a CFCA-nominated performance in last year’s “Young Adult.” As GREAT as all of that is, Patton Oswalt’s greatest gift (outside of perhaps being one of the people for whom Twitter was invented) may be on a stand-up comedy stage. Watch the Grammy-nominated “Patton Oswalt: Finest Hour,” recently released on DVD, and tell me I’m wrong.

DVD Review: ‘Community’ Star Rocks Stage in ‘Donald Glover: Weirdo’

Donald Glover: Weirdo

CHICAGO – We get a lot of stand-up comedy DVDs here in the HollywoodChicago.com offices but we don’t often have the time or interest to include them in our coverage. We had to make an exception for “Donald Glover: Weirdo,” a hysterical stand-up show from the brilliant star of NBC’s “Community” and the man also known as Childish Gambino. Writer, actor, rapper, stand-up — Donald Glover rules.

Blu-ray Review: Inconsistent ‘South Park: The Complete Fifteenth Season’

South Park

CHICAGO – They were likely distracted by the massive success of “The Book of Mormon” (and basically admit as much on the spectacular documentary “6 Days to Air: The Making of South Park,” included on this release), but the fifteenth season of Comedy Central’s often-brilliant “South Park” was a bit of a rollercoaster ride in terms of quality. There were still some brilliant episodes like the season premiere, “Humancentipad,” which merges Apple’s Terms of Service with “The Human Centipede,” but there are were some outings this year that just didn’t work.

TV News: Comedy Central Adds ‘Community’ Off-Net Rights to Network

Community

CHICAGO – It was only a few weeks ago when the cult favorite “Communtiy” didn’t have a home at all. Through two and a half seasons on NBC, the show was put on hiatus as the network decided what to do. Now, the hit comedy is returning to the NBC Thursday night lineup tomorrow night at 7 p.m. CST and it has also found a new home.

TV News: ‘Key & Peele’ Renewed For a Second Season

Key & Peele

CHICAGO – Fans of the new sketch comedy show “Key & Peele” will be happy to hear that Comedy Central has renewed the show for a second season. The news came this morning from Kent Alterman, Head of Original Programming and Production at Comedy Central, who announced the news with a little joke of his own.

Blu-ray Review: Latest Volumes of Animated Hits ‘The Simpsons,’ ‘Futurama’

The Simpsons S14

CHICAGO – If one were listing the most influential people in the history of television, right there next to legends like Rod Serling, Gene Roddenberry, and Norman Lear, would have to lie Matt Groening, the man who reinvented TV animation for all time. Two of his creations, “Futurama” and “The Simpsons,” had volumes released recently on Blu-ray and both are typically FILLED with remarkable special features. We’ve said it before — Fox animation is the standard when it comes to TV on Blu-ray.
