Blu-ray Review: Terrence Malick’s ‘Badlands’ Joins Criterion Collection
Submitted by BrianTT on April 3, 2013 - 7:15pmCHICAGO – Any list of the most influential films of the ’70s that doesn’t include Terrence Malick’s brilliant “Badlands” is incomplete. It’s one of those cinematic works that’s so important to its era and how it influenced filmmakers that saw it that it’s hard to put into reviews in a brief review such as this one. It is iconic in the way Malick took the familiar (it’s based on a true story that was well-known at the time) and made it artistic. It’s also a great selection for The Criterion Collection, joining Malick’s “Days of Heaven” and “The Thin Red Line” in the most important series of Blu-rays ever released.
Film Review: ‘The Amazing Spider-man’ Lacks Personality Despite Best Efforts by Talented Stars
Submitted by BrianTT on July 3, 2012 - 10:07amCHICAGO – They could have called it “The Meh Spider-man.” While Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Denis Leary, Sally Field, and Martin Sheen do their absolute best to elevate one of the most generic and uninspired superhero screenplays since men first put on spandex in front of the camera, they can’t save this wasted opportunity to reboot a franchise in a way that doesn’t feel generated by a committee of Marvel producers.

Blu-ray Review: Preposterously Bad ‘The Double’ Embarrasses Cast, Insults Audience
Submitted by mattmovieman on January 27, 2012 - 8:39amCHICAGO – Avid moviegoers like to pride themselves on their ability to predict twists and turns prior to their occurrence in a script. This is often the result of formulaic writing and creaky clichés, but in the case of Michael Brandt’s “The Double,” no exemplary knowledge of cinema is necessary to foretell every last plot point. Only functional eyesight and an IQ above zero are required.
Film Review: ‘The Double’ Copies Lazy Performances, Silly Twists
Submitted by BrianTT on November 4, 2011 - 2:20pmRating: 1.0/5.0 |
CHICAGO – It’s ironic that a film called “The Double,” starring Richard Gere & Topher Grace, would remind one of so many superior thrillers. It is in itself a double, a carbon copy of better films that focuses on all of the wrong elements, thinking that audiences are still dumb enough that just throwing twist after twist at them will keep their head spinning enough to not realize that what they just saw not only makes no sense at all but wasn’t even remotely entertaining.

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Love Happens’ Epitomizes Dire State of Romantic Comedy
Submitted by mattmovieman on February 4, 2010 - 3:20pmCHICAGO – In the realm of lazy date movies, “Love Happens” achieves a sort of morbid grandeur. There isn’t a single original or authentic moment in all 109 minutes of the picture, which is so devoted to its formulaic structure that it often doesn’t make a lick of sense. People say and do things for no conceivable reason other than to create “crises” leading to “resolutions” leading to audience exasperation.
