TV Review: Television Has Evolved Beyond NBC’s ‘Chicago PD’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 8, 2014 - 12:00pmThere’s a fine line between old-fashioned and stale. Some will look at “Chicago PD,” NBC’s spin-off of “Chicago Fire” from mega-producer Dick Wolf, and say that it’s the kind of tried-and-true cop show that they don’t really make that often any more. I would say there’s a reason they don’t make them any more.
TV Review: NBC’s Struggles Continue with ‘Sean Saves the World,’ ‘Welcome to the Family’
Submitted by BrianTT on October 3, 2013 - 2:43pmCHICAGO – People often ask me why low-rated NBC shows like “Community” keep getting renewed (or how “Whitney” and “Up All Night” got a second season) and I often turn to a sports analogy — they have no one in the minor leagues to replace them.
TV Review: NBC’s ‘Ironside’ is Worst New Drama of 2013
Submitted by BrianTT on October 1, 2013 - 11:32amCHICAGO – As the TV world was bombarded by new shows last week, I heard a number of complaints about the new dramas and comedies. “Hostages” was too cliched. “The Blacklist” wasn’t believable. “SHIELD” wasn’t fun enough. “Lucky 7” was, well, just awful. People, those shows will look even better if you happen to stumble upon “Ironside,” premiering tomorrow night on NBC.
Blu-ray Review: ‘Hannibal’ is Best Drama on Network TV
Submitted by BrianTT on September 27, 2013 - 9:02amCHICAGO – Has there ever been a network TV show more cinematic than “Hannibal”? Especially when one watches it commercial-free in “binge” format on the newly-released Blu-ray, one can even more distinctly appreciate the fact that the first season of Bryan Fuller’s incredible show, the best on network TV, plays like long film. Scratch that.
TV Review: NBC Has Likable Hit in ‘The Michael J. Fox Show’
Submitted by BrianTT on September 25, 2013 - 3:28pmCHICAGO – Seriously, if “The Michael J. Fox Show” doesn’t connect with NBC’s target audience, they might as well give up. Yes, the show could use a stronger lead-in but it pairs well with “Parenthood,” also returning tomorrow night, September 26, 2013, and it’s the most straight-up likable new sitcom of the season. The first episode is a bit rocky and overly self-referential but it settles in nicely over the next two and already looks like it could be on for years.
TV Review: Fascinating Character Fuels James Spader in ‘The Blacklist’
Submitted by BrianTT on September 23, 2013 - 1:37pmCHICAGO – When he gets a part that he can bite his teeth into, James Spader chews it up. He got such a part when his agent got him the lead role on NBC’s “The Blacklist,” premiering tonight, September 23, 2013.

TV Feature: The 10 Most Promising Network Shows of Fall 2013
Submitted by BrianTT on September 10, 2013 - 1:32pmCHICAGO – In the decade-plus that I’ve been covering network television, no season comes close to this upcoming one in terms of lackluster, bland, uninspired programming.
TV Review: NBC Wants You to Enroll in Likable ‘Camp’
Submitted by BrianTT on July 9, 2013 - 8:32amCHICAGO – Here are a few words that adequately describe NBC’s “Camp,” a Summer series premiering this Wednesday, July 10, 2013 — “Likable,” “Amiable,” “Cute,” “Fun.” It’s not designed to challenge your dramatic expectations and delivers exactly what you’d expect it to deliver but the cast has some notable stand-outs and the whole thing has the feel of a long weekend away in the Summer — fun while it lasts if not overly memorable.
TV Review: ‘Survivor’ Meets ‘LOST’ on NBC’s Strange ‘Siberia’
Submitted by BrianTT on July 1, 2013 - 12:31pmCHICAGO – Every Summer needs a guilty pleasure. (Anyone else watch “The Glass House”? Just me? OK. Moving on.) This Summer’s guilty pleasure could easily be NBC’s truly bizarre “Siberia,” premiering tonight at 9pm CST. This hybrid of “Survivor” and “LOST” has some truly rough edges but also contains an addictively strange premise that could separate it from a lot of the bland network offerings this season.
