Sons of Anarchy

What to Watch: Sept. 10-16, 2013

Parade's End

CHICAGO – The most TV-centric column yet advising What to Watch on DVD, Blu-ray, Netflix, Amazon, On Demand, and more is another nearly random collection of offerings that you can use to guide your way through the new releases shelf at Best Buy, the On Demand section on Vudu, the store on iTunes, and maybe even Netflix and Hulu. Pick your favorites. This is the way we’d rank these new releases if you have a free night this weekend or money to burn next week.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Frankie Go Boom’ Offers Plentiful Humiliation, Few Laughs

Frankie Go Boom Blu-ray

CHICAGO – “Frankie Go Boom” is a comedy about deplorable people who commit heartless acts and expect us to laugh at them. It casts the hugely lovable Chris O’Dowd as the most loathsome schlub ever to materialize on the big screen since Josh Gad’s wretched comic relief in “Love and Other Drugs.” And it puts Ron Perlman in drag but fails to give him a single laugh-worthy line. What a misfire.

TV Feature: The 10 Best TV Shows of 2012

CHICAGO – Zombies. Dragons. Gangsters. Meth dealers. David Lynch. It was a weird year for television. Was it a good year? Sorta. It was nowhere near the landmark year of 2011 but there was still a lot to like and it was easy to get to 30 shows worth mentioning.

TV Review: ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Returns For Intense Fifth Season

CHICAGO – The Shakespearian tragedy that is “Sons of Anarchy” ascends to a new level of drama in the strong first two episodes of the fifth season as the writers pick up close to where they left off in the brilliant fourth year of one cable’s biggest hits. With fantastic guest stars like Jimmy Smits and Harold Perrineau, “Sons of Anarchy” seems likely to top even last year’s impressive numbers.

Blu-ray Review: Fourth Season of ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Marks Creative Return

Sons of Anarchy: S4

CHICAGO – The third season of “Sons of Anarchy” was an absolute mess, the kind of misguided, repetitive disaster that can sometimes kill a great show. And yet the creators and team behind this hit FX series completely bounced back in season four, recently released on Blu-ray and DVD. With more emphasis on the dark family secrets of Clay (Ron Perlman), Gemma (Katey Sagal), and Jax (Charlie Hunnam), “Sons of Anarchy” arguably reached its peak this season and I expect the upcoming fifth season (come back Tuesday for a review) to top even this one. Catch up before getting back on your ride.

TV News: ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Renewed For Sixth Season Before Start of Fifth Season

Sons of Anarchy S2

CHICAGO – Remember how we told you back in October that the FX hit series “Sons of Anarchy” was going to be renewed for a fifth season. Well, that season has not premiered yet, nor is there a release schedule set up yet, but FX is willing to invest even more in their hit drama. The basic cable network officially signed a deal for a sixth season of production for “Sons” that will follow the yet-to-be-released fifth season.

TV News: ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Snags Extra Episode For Season Four

Sons of Anarchy S2

CHICAGO – Fans of the hit FX series “Sons of Anarchy” will need to move their fourth season finale parties back a week. No, the show is not delayed, but, rather, extended. FX announced today that the fourth season will have one extra episode, bringing the season’s total to 14.

TV News: ‘American Horror Story’ Gets Green Light For Second FX Season

American Horror Story

CHICAGO – Show creators/executive producers Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk are on quite a roll. After creating the hit series “Nip/Tuck” and putting America in a singing and dancing craze with “Glee,” the pair have created another mega hit with his horror/drama series “American Horror Story.” Now, the pair hit treat instead of trick on Halloween afternoon as FX has given the go ahead for a second season of the series.

TV News: ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Sets Series, FX Records

Sons of Anarchy S2

CHICAGOFX’s hit series “Sons of Anarchy” has become the most watched program in the history of the network. The season four premiere of the show had 6.5 million viewers watching when it premiered and added another 3 million in its encore plays. The 9.5 million total viewers for the one episode included 6.3 million adults from 18-49 years old.

TV Feature: The 10 Biggest Emmy Snubs of 2011

CHICAGO – Before getting too deep into what the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences did wrong this year, they deserve a few moments of high praise. First-time Best Series nominations for “Boardwalk Empire,” “Game of Thrones,” “Friday Night Lights,” and “Parks and Recreation” — those were stellar choices to fill those slots.
