DVD Review: Frank Vincent Stars in Local Drama ‘Chicago Overcoat’

Chicago Overcoat with Frank Vincent and Armand Assante

CHICAGO – Frank Vincent brings gravity to the somewhat generic tale of “Chicago Overcoat,” a local production about an aging hitman trying to do one last job before trying to retire from a profession that doesn’t come with pension plans. After traveling the festival circuit for sometime, the hitman drama is now available on DVD.

TV Review: FX Boxing Drama ‘Lights Out’ Balances Cliché With Character

CHICAGO – What happens after the final bell rings in the life of a boxer? FX’s drama centers around a character who goes from having a bloody cut above his eye sewn shut to making breakfast for his daughters within the first few scenes.

DVD Review: Lost Robert Altman Comedy ‘Brewster McCloud’

Brewster McCloud

CHICAGO – Robert Altman made very few films that didn’t have at least a few redeeming qualities and often much more than that faint praise. Even Altman’s relative failures were often fascinating in their own way. Such a film is 1970’s “Brewster McCloud,” a work nowhere near as beloved as some of his ’70s comedies but that definitely warrants a look on its newly remastered DVD, available exclusively through the WB Shop online.

Blu-Ray Review: John Carpenter’s ‘Escape From L.A.’ With Kurt Russell

Escape From L.A.

CHICAGO – There is no Blu-ray justice. The great “Escape From New York” sits unavailable in HD, along with dozens of other great movies of its era, but the vastly inferior sequel “Escape From L.A.” lands on the format this week. “L.A.” isn’t a horrible film, but it works mostly because of the goodwill created by love for the original, which makes that film’s unavailability on the format all the more bewildering.

Interview: Director Brian Caunter of ‘Chicago Overcoat’ at the Chicago International Film Festival

CHICAGO – Last Saturday at the Chicago International Film Festival was a very important debut for the new film “Chicago Overcoat,” directed by newcomer Brian Caunter. The hometown audience gave big thumbs up to the gritty mobster film.

Blu-Ray Review: Oliver Stone’s ‘W.’ Disappointing Film, Great Blu-Ray

W.
HollywoodChicago.com Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0

CHICAGO – What happened to Oliver Stone? Despite strong performances by Josh Brolin, James Cromwell, and Elizabeth Banks, “W.” is one of the most inert, middle-of-the-road movies that this once-controversial auteur has ever made, helped on the home market by an excellent Blu-Ray release but still a little “eh” as a film.
