TV Review: Excellent ‘Southland’ Returns With First New TNT Episodes
Submitted by BrianTT on January 3, 2011 - 10:20amCHICAGO – TNT’s “Southland” has found that rare balance that evades most modern cop shows. In fact, it may be the best show of its type since “NYPD Blue.”
TV Review: Shocking Mid-Season Premiere of TNT Hit ‘The Closer’
Submitted by BrianTT on December 6, 2010 - 2:42pmCHICAGO – It’s nearly impossible to write about the details of the season premiere of “The Closer” as TNT has asked us not to discuss the shocking events that open the episode so we will have to talk around the specifics more than usual. You may wonder why or how we can review an episode with no details? We’ll give it a shot because this is excellent television and we wouldn’t want to leave it un-reviewed.
TV Review: Talented Stars Carry ‘Men of a Certain Age’
Submitted by BrianTT on December 6, 2010 - 11:55amCHICAGO – It has yet to approach the writing standards of the best television on the air right now but the stars of “Men of a Certain Age” continue to make it one of the more interesting programs on cable.
DVD Review: Ray Romano, Scott Bakula, Andre Braugher in ‘Men of a Certain Age’
Submitted by BrianTT on November 21, 2010 - 3:43pmCHICAGO – There’s a reason beyond simple truth-in-titling that I put the names of the three stars of TNT’s “Men of a Certain Age,” of which the first season was recently released on DVD, in the headline of this review — they’re the reason to watch. Created by Romano and Mike Royce, “Men of a Certain Age” is an imperfect program with at least one perfect performance (Emmy nominee Braugher) and two that sometimes come close. The “Men” of the title are excellent and if the program around them ever rises to their standard it could become one of the best on television.
TV Review: ‘Glory Daze’ Plays Like Boring Rip-Off of ‘Animal House’
Submitted by BrianTT on November 16, 2010 - 6:43pmCHICAGO – “National Lampoon’s Animal House” does not seem to want to leave us. It rears its bathroom-humor head on a regular basis in TV and movies. But rarely is a tribute to the iconic frat house comedy so blatant as TBS’ new comedy “Glory Daze,” debuting tonight, November 16th, 2010.
TV Review: Tricia Helfer Brings Color to TNT Cop Drama ‘Dark Blue’
Submitted by BrianTT on August 3, 2010 - 9:56amCHICAGO – TNT’s hit-and-miss cop drama “Dark Blue” returns tomorrow night, August 4th, 2010 with a great pair of episodes featuring the addition of the always-excellent Tricia Helfer of “Battlestar Galactica,” but the improvements aren’t merely in the supporting cast, as the first two hours of season two hint at the opposite of a sophomore slump.
TV Review: New Look, Same Old ‘The Closer’ on TNT
Submitted by BrianTT on July 12, 2010 - 10:42amCHICAGO – As my grandfather used to say, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Such is the formula of a hit show like “The Closer,” which returns tonight, July 12th, 2010 for its sixth season premiere. The characters may be coping with a new setting but it’s the same old show.
TV Review: The Lazy Days of Summer With ‘Rizzoli & Isles’
Submitted by BrianTT on July 12, 2010 - 10:11amCHICAGO – Yes, it is summer on cable: The season of soapy plotlines and unimaginative writing. Unfortunately, TNT’s new summer series “Rizzoli & Isles” falls prey to that. It’s based on the characters of best-selling author Tess Gerritsen, but is co-written and co-executive-produced by Janet Tamaro. And though Tamaro’s résumé includes one episode of “Lost,” it also includes the popular but campy “Bones” and the formulaic CSI franchise, “CSI: NY.”

TV Review: ‘Hawthorne’ is Custom-Made Drama For Summer TV Wasteland
Submitted by BrianTT on June 22, 2010 - 8:45amCHICAGO – Summer is the time for fluff. And that’s what “Hawthorne” is. It’s a drama that crosses the genre boundary into the realm of soap opera. Having said that, the second season premiere of “Hawthorne” is not nearly as melodramatic as TNT’s on-air promos might have you believe with their “she’s all woman” tagline.
