Film Review: Werner Herzog Towers Over Miscast ‘Jack Reacher’ Star Tom Cruise in Five Mere Scenes
Submitted by HollywoodChicago.com on December 21, 2012 - 1:42amCHICAGO – While normally I’d never think the date I screened a film was newsworthy, being subjected to “Jack Reacher” on Dec. 13, 2012 turned out to put even a therapist into therapy. The very next day, well, just two words: Sandy Hook.
Blu-ray Review: Interminable ‘Rock of Ages’ Goes On and On and On and On
Submitted by mattmovieman on October 23, 2012 - 9:10amCHICAGO – How can the same man who made one of the most lovable movie musicals of the last decade go on to make one of the most hatable? Adam Shankman’s bouncy, broad approach was a splendid fit for the playful “Hairspray,” but it is all wrong for Chris D’Arienzo’s raunchy, melodramatic ode to ’80s rock. His show, “Rock of Ages,” may have been a hit on Broadway, but it was a complete flop with moviegoers and critics alike.
Blu-ray Review: ‘Born on the Fourth of July’ Joins Universal Anniversary Line
Submitted by BrianTT on July 9, 2012 - 8:44amCHICAGO – A number of films have been inducted into the Universal line of 100th Anniversary Blu-rays, the best wave of catalog Blu-ray releases of 2012 and an increasingly impressive collection, but few have been as current as Oliver Stone’s “Born on the Fourth of July.” Oliver Stone has a new movie in theaters (“Savages”), co-star Kyra Sedgwick is starting her final season of TNT’s “The Closer” this week, and, well, star Tom Cruise has been in the headlines a bit lately. Maybe you noticed.
Film Review: Tom Cruise, Julianne Hough Have Fun in ‘Rock of Ages’
Submitted by PatrickMcD on June 15, 2012 - 8:47amCHICAGO – Although the jukebox musical needs an available pasture to be put out onto, the new film “Rock of Ages” – based on the Broadway stage play – improves on that genre by having a little fun and lots of tongue-in-cheek. Tom Cruise, Julianne Hough, Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand rock the cashbox.

Blu-ray Review: Fantastic Release For Great ‘Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol’
Submitted by BrianTT on April 20, 2012 - 2:18pmCHICAGO – I was lucky enough to attend a press screening of Brad Bird’s “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol” at the IMAX theater at Navy Pier and I wondered if my adoration for this incredibly fun movie was in part due to just being overwhelmed by the size of it in IMAX. Nope. I liked it even more the second time on Blu-ray. This is a fantastic action movie, the best film in the series and as fun a time as you could have with a new release in the genre. Don’t rent it, buy it.
TV Review: NBC’s High-Powered ‘The Firm’ Barely Passes the Bar
Submitted by BrianTT on January 8, 2012 - 3:46pmCHICAGO – If NBC’s “The Firm” was viewed as a court case, the jury would probably be deadlocked. The problem is that most modern TV viewers don’t try a case again. If they consider a premiere a creative mistrial — something with elements that work but not completely engaging enough to make it an instant addition to the Season Pass Manager — they usually don’t come back.
Film Review: ‘Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol’ Rocks Your Holiday
Submitted by BrianTT on December 15, 2011 - 4:56pmCHICAGO – Brad Bird proves that he can make the leap from Pixar to action with one of the best genre films of the year, the adrenalized “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.”
