2019 Cinepocalypse

CHICAGO – Genre films, those categories of movies that have specific themes – horror, thriller, comedy – but remain undefined in their unique qualities, is exactly what the Cinepocalypse Film Festival is all about. The week-long 2019 edition of the fest kicks off on Thursday, June 13th, at Chicago’s historic Music Box Theatre with the World Premiere of “Verotika,” written and directed by Glenn Danzig, founder and vocalist of the legendary band Misfits. Box Office News: ‘Total Recall’ Can’t Topple ‘The Dark Knight Rises’

Total Recall

CHICAGO – “The Dark Knight Rises” held the top spot at the domestic box office for the third straight week, fending off newcomers “Total Recall” and “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days” with relative ease. Neither newcomer made much of a dent at all but “TDKR” should fall next week to “The Bourne Legacy.”

Film Review: ‘Total Recall’ Remake Should Be Wiped From Your Memory

CHICAGO – Paul Verhoeven’s “Total Recall” has been run through a machine and turned into a personality-less, numbing exercise in CGI action with a complete lack of any characters worth giving a damn about and a totally wasted opportunity at social commentary.

Book Review: ‘Tales From Development Hell: The Greatest Movies Never Made?’

CHICAGO – There’s some incredible alternate universe in which Darren Aronofsky directed “Batman: Year One,” John Boorman made “The Lord of the Rings” (with The Beatles!!!), James Cameron filmed “Fantastic Voyage,” and Frank Darabont wrote the fourth “Indiana Jones” movie.

Blu-Ray Review: Matt Damon, Emily Blunt in ‘The Adjustment Bureau’

The Adjustment Bureau

CHICAGO – “The Adjustment Bureau” was a surprising success in a season full of them (“Hanna,” “Source Code,” “Win Win,” more), earning strong reviews and breaking $100 million worldwide. That may not seem like a blockbuster for Matt Damon but when one considers that this is an existential, sci-fi, noir, romantic action movie, it doesn’t exactly scream obvious financial success. And it’s the kind of film that I suspect will grow in esteem over the years as its fans share it with their friends. A great Blu-ray release with excellent supplemental material doesn’t hurt.

Film Review: Chemistry of Matt Damon, Emily Blunt Drives ‘The Adjustment Bureau’

CHICAGO – George Nolfi’s “The Adjustment Bureau,” starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt, is a nearly-great movie, a rare piece that merges romance and science fiction into something that is at-times mesmerizing.

  • Elizabeth Laidlaw

CHICAGO – The recent limited series “The Red Line” on CBS-TV was notable for a couple elements – it was set in Chicago and it featured Chicago actors in major roles.
