Benjamin Button is not a great movie

I should know better by now, but I did read F. Scott Fitzgerald’s short story that this movie was “based” on before I saw the movie. BIG mistake because there are really only two things that make the movie like the story: 1. The main character’s name is Benjamin Button, and 2. Benjamin was born with an old man’s body, which grew backward in time until he died as a baby.

Five Famous Moments in Oscar History

HollywoodChicago.com’s own Patrick McDonald and Chicago’s Foremost Oscar Expert Jeffery Leibham team up for a couple of VLOGs regarding the famous…and infamous moments in Oscar history.

Part ONE

Frost/Nixon

Directed by Ron Howard
3.5 stars
::spoiler alert::

Again, I’m on a limb here due to the 24 Hour Rule, but I honor my commitment to write about my experience today. In “The Reader” fashion, some initial observations I shall not necessarily be held to after the 24 hour rule expires:

1. Who doesn’t like Sam Rockwell? C’mon, the guy’s just cool.

Slumdog Millionaire

Directed by Danny Boyle
4 stars
::spoiler alert::

I was introduced to this film in two ways:

1. I saw a commercial for it in which there was a lot of Bollywood dancing & high-energy music.

2. My boss told me about walking out of it about 15 minutes in because the images were disturbing & they were duped into thinking it was the feel-good movie of the year.

Benjamin Buttons can hold its own

The Curious Case of Benjamin seeing it again for the second time as well, was still good. In fact the movie seemed to lose part of its luster. Maybe it is just a film that can only be seen once. Especially with its three plus hour playing time. Still touching to watch, and also I still found myself laughing at the man who was struck by lightening seven times.

The Reader

Directed by Stephen Daldry
3 stars
::spoiler alert::

I’m going against type to write about a movie within 24 hours of seeing it, not to mention just a few short hours. I’m wary about doing so because I need time to absorb. So instead of presenting a final picture of the, well, picture, I’ll jot down a few thoughts:

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Directed by David Fincher
3 stars
::spoiler alert::

I love David Fincher’s work. I especially love it when he’s paired with Brad Pitt. He brings the grit of his music video background to an extended format, cleans it up a little, but not enough that you don’t still know there’s a layer of filth underneath. I like that. I’m a grit-girl.

THEATER, TV, DVD & BLU-RAY REVIEWS

  • New Moon DVD Thumb

    CHICAGO – Only those completely unaware of any happenings in the world of film and DVD would still be unaware that “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” is hitting stores tomorrow, March 20th, 2010, with some outlets even holding parties tonight in advance of a midnight sale. Of course, we have our copy already and are here to break down what to expect when you finally get your hands on it.

  • Ninja Assassin Blu-Ray

    CHICAGO – Maybe a film called “Ninja Assassin” starring Korean pop star Rain would be some people’s idea of a good time, but not mine. The best martial arts films are the ones that delve into the psychology of a warrior, turning grandstanding set-pieces into the artful externalization of his (or her) inner battles. “Ninja Assassin” may contain lots of martial arts, but the film is as much a work of art as a McDonald’s Happy Meal.
