Interview: Matthew Goode Focuses on Inner Challenges in New Film ‘Brideshead Revisited’

CHICAGO – The celebrated Evelyn Waugh novel and 1981 BBC miniseries “Brideshead Revisited” have put the unusually titled story into cultural consciousness. Beloved by readers for years, the adapted miniseries brought the popular characters to life and further cemented the epic and literary journey of class awareness, star-crossed love and fine estates.

The latest adaptation is a truncated film version that stars Matthew Goode as main protagonist Charles Ryder. HollywoodChicago.com recently interviewed Goode on the task of fulfilling the expectations of the much-loved work.

Actor Matthew Goode for “Brideshead Revisited” in Chicago on July 10, 2008.

Emma Thompson as Lady Marchmain in “Brideshead Revisited”.

“Charles has definitely been my biggest acting challenge so far,” Goode said. “I was very scared because the elephant in the room is the miniseries adaptation and Jeremy Irons’ performance in it. That is a bit of a burden. But because of the script and the people involved, it actually became an easy decision to take the part.”

Charles Ryder is an introverted, middle-class artist who gets the opportunity to attend a prestigious men’s college in England.

While there, he gets swept up into an outsider group of individuals led by a precocious fop named Sebastian (Ben Whishaw). The estate that Sebastian’s family owns is called Brideshead and it’s anchored by a stunning mansion of magnificent size and beauty.

Charles is taken in by both the estate and the family along with the free-spirited daughter Julia (Hayley Atwell).

Goode explained the difficulties of playing the internal Charles without the device of hearing what he was thinking as in the miniseries: “I didn’t have the benefit of a voice-over in this adaptation to explain my thoughts. In the initial reading of the script, I thought the character of Charles came across quite cold.”

“But in essence, he’s not that way,” Goode continued. “Once you look at the psychology of the character – who grows up without a mother in a post-Victorian society and without love essentially through being raised by his father – he’s an incredibly lonely guy. [This is especially true] in the sense where most of his companionship is male.”

Matthew Goode as Charles Ryder, Hayley Atwell as Julia Flyte and Ben Whishaw as Sebastian Flyte in “Brideshead Revisited”.

Rating: 3.5/5.0

Sebastian has outward affection for Charles. In this film version, it’s acted out physically. This is noticed by the overseer and matriarch of the family, Lady Marchmain (Emma Thompson), and she cautions Charles about his attachment to the strict Catholic clan.

“The religious theme is a very important issue,” Goode related. “The audience might think: ‘Oh, Christ!’ The use of organized religion and how it can be not a good thing is there, but the film comments more on parenting and how parents can screw up a person.”

When Charles’ attraction for Julia deepens, Sebastian’s jealousy threatens to topple everything. This is where Lady Marchmain steps in. She alters the circumstances to prevent her children from making – in her view – fatal mistakes.

Matthew Goode as Charles Ryder, Hayley Atwell as Julia Flyte and Ben Whishaw as Sebastian Flyte in “Brideshead Revisited”.

“Emma’s character says to Charles: ‘All I ever really wanted was for my children to love me,’” Goode said. “In Emma’s performance, you have incredible sympathy for her. Though people who read the novel know Lady Marchmain’s backstory, Emma still gets it across for people who haven’t read it. There is too much humanity there for her to be seen as a villain.”

RELATED IMAGE GALLERY
View our full, high-resolution “Brideshead Revisited” image gallery.

RELATED READING
More film reviews from critic Patrick McDonald.

Charles is forced away from Brideshead and the family. Still, a couple meetings through the years again involve him with Sebastian and reunite him with Julia. This “revisited” part of his life could determine the fate of everyone.

“It’s notable that Sebastian treated Charles like crap and was a petulant child and a drunk,” Goode explained about the characters. “But Charles actually does as much as he can and he loved him in friendship. He gets screwed over in so many ways but never tries to enforce his integrity on anyone.”

Goode concluded with an observation about Charles: “There were particular ambiguities that we wanted to remain ambiguities. While it’s explained beautifully through prose in the book, Charles doesn’t show much of himself in the film. That was the challenge. I had to get all of that [across] and not make him morose.”

“Brideshead Revisited” features Emma Thompson, Matthew Goode, Michael Gambon, Ben Whishaw, Hayley Atwell and Greta Scacchi. The film opened on July 25, 2008 in Chicago at AMC River East 21, Landmark’s Century Centre Cinema and CineArts 6 in Evanston, Ill. “Brideshead Revisited” will then expand to additional theaters on Aug. 1, 2008.

Potter Totters to Dark Side in Explosive ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’

CHICAGO – “If you didn’t watch the film and looked at people watching it, you’d see they’re constantly ducking and grabbing at things,” said IMAX Filmed President Greg Foster. “IMAX 3D is at the bridge of your nose.”

Michael Gambon plays Albus Dumbledore.
This between-your-eyes, in-your-face acronym Foster hypes from the helm of the uber-modern film company likely isn’t anything new to you. If you haven’t been IMAXed lately, though, times have changed. The enormously encompassing 3D injection is a new kind of happy pill.

On July 11 at Navy Pier in Chicago, the fifth Harry Potter iteration – “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” – takes center stage in IMAX. Its goal is to please your brain, tease your body and tickle all the nerve endings in between so you’re just on the brink of prophylactic shock.

“I’m in my 40s,” Foster said, who in 2007 is being invited as an Oscar-voting member, in an interview with Adam Fendelman. “When I was a kid, the studios knew they had the 12- to 24-year-olds on opening weekend. They’re more elusive today. They’re home watching DVDs, playing video games or hanging out on their parents’ 70-inch plasma TVs.

“They’re not going to the multiplexes to the same degree. You have to give them something they can’t replicate at home. IMAX 3D takes you somewhere you dream of going but probably won’t ever get to.”

Played by Daniel Radcliffe, Harry Potter grows increasingly haunted.

Short for Image Maximum, the IMAX you likely know best is its older DMR technology. It’s 2D. After being created nearly 40 years ago as an exploratory film format for short and expo films, only about five years ago with “Apollo 13” did IMAX technology ramp up to truly cerebral feats.

Our two eyes instinctively zero in on a single focal point that’s viewed from slightly different positions. Two slightly different images result. IMAX 3D exploits this. It actually consists of two separate strips of film projected simultaneously onto a screen.

The brain fuses these images into one through the process of stereopsis. Polarized glasses – not the red-blue glasses of anaglyph yesteryear – are deftly aligned with the light from mega-powered IMAX projectors. These 15,000-watt lamps are so bright you could see the light on the moon from Earth with the naked eye.

IMAX Filmed President/Chairman Greg Foster

Techno babble aside, for Harry Potter junkies this translates into an “explosive,” 20-minute finale that has been converted into IMAX 3D. The preceding 118 minutes are 2D. Despite all its money, manpower and grandeur, IMAX can’t yet rip out a feature-length, non-digital film entirely in 3D.

Yet.

Once you’ve hit the 118-minute mark, the film will flash green Harry Potter glasses on the bottom of the screen. This is your signal to get nerdy. With glasses armed, Harry Potter and his gang of almost-adult miscreants will barrel with omnipresence into your body.

Previous to its moment in Harry Potter history this July, family films like “Happy Feet” and “Night at the Museum” came to moviegoers in IMAX with incremental success. The film “300” was especially “a big deal” to IMAX, Foster says, who acknowledges that it did 10 percent of the business on only 1 percent of the screens.

Evanna Lynch plays Luna Lovegood.

The creation process is one that’s “not free but also not going to break the bank,” Foster says, adding that he only has eight slots a year to time his prowess around blockbuster films. Foster targets visionary filmmakers like George Lucas, Ron Howard, Tom Hanks, Zach Snyder and Chris Nolan.

As technology refines, conversion fleets. He says “Apollo 13” consumed three months of conversion time, “The Matrix Revolutions” abridged to three weeks and “Spider-Man 3” whizzed by in 10 days.

“Down the road, the vast majority will be in 3D. We’ll see some kind of enhanced, interactive experience,” Foster said. “I’m constantly pushing the envelope of invention. I have all the confidence in the world that what will take place in the home, in 3D or in theaters will be at the forefront of innovation, imagination and invention.”
