Blu-ray Review: ‘Safe’ Consistently Threatens to Become Genuinely Interesting

Sahe Blu-ray Statham

CHICAGO – Not to be confused with Todd Haynes’s 1995 masterpiece featuring Julianne Moore in the performance of her career, “Safe” is a forgettable would-be blockbuster that puts star Jason Statham through the emotional wringer in order to justify a marathon of repetitive carnage. This is as predictable a star vehicle as one could imagine, yet the direction by Boaz Yakin is so strong that it nearly saves the material.

TV Review: Fourth Season of ‘Parenthood’ Begins Confidently

CHICAGO – There’s an easy-going confidence in the first two episodes of the new season of “Parenthood” that separates the best family dramas from pure cliche. The team behind this beloved series clearly has reached a point where they know these characters down to their cores. The best family dramas reach a point where the characters feel genuine enough that we look forward each week to seeing how they’re doing, like old friends who we only see every seven days.

TV Review: ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Returns For Intense Fifth Season

CHICAGO – The Shakespearian tragedy that is “Sons of Anarchy” ascends to a new level of drama in the strong first two episodes of the fifth season as the writers pick up close to where they left off in the brilliant fourth year of one cable’s biggest hits. With fantastic guest stars like Jimmy Smits and Harold Perrineau, “Sons of Anarchy” seems likely to top even last year’s impressive numbers.

HollywoodChicago.com Hookup: Due to High Demand, 10 More Pairs of Anytime Passes to ‘Bangkok Revenge’

CHICAGO – Due to such high demand from last week’s HollywoodChicago.com Hookup: Film for the new Jon Foo film “Bangkok Revenge,” we spoke to the studio again and secured 10 additional pairs of run-of-engagement, anytime, guaranteed movie passes for the new martial arts thrill ride!

Blu-ray Review: Strong Actresses Carry First Season of ‘2 Broke Girls’

2 Broke Girls

CHICAGOCBS’s “2 Broke Girls,” which recently had its first season released on Blu-ray and DVD courtesy of Warner Bros., isn’t about to break the mold of TV comedy. There are some sitcoms that try something new and there are others that merely fit a pattern. There’s nothing wrong with that. We’ve had buddy comedies since they started making sitcoms and while “2 Broke Girls” may be little more than a “Laverne & Shirley” update, it is well-done enough to make its familiarity easy to overlook.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Homeland: The Complete First Season’ Totally Rocks

Homeland

CHICAGO – The popular choice as to the show most likely to derail AMC’s “Mad Men” from winning a record-setting five Emmys in a row for Best Dramatic Series is a newcomer to the pantheon of most-acclaimed programs, Showtime’s brilliant “Homeland,” recently released on Blu-ray and DVD. This is must-see TV in every possible way.

DVD Review: NBC Comedies ‘30 Rock,’ ‘The Office,’ ‘Parks and Recreation,’ ‘Up All Night’

Up All Night

CHICAGONBC/Universal released a wave of Blu-ray and DVD releases last week as four of their comedies came home with “30 Rock: Season 6,” “The Office: Season Eight,” “Parks and Recreation: Season Four,” and “Up All Night: Season One.” For some reason, “The Office” is the only NBC comedy available in HD (with an UltraViolet copy to boot) but all four sets are well-transferred and three of them feature impressive bonus material. Get your laugh on.

Blu-ray Review: Trio of HBO Comedies in ‘Bored to Death,’ ‘How to Make It in America,’ ‘Hung’

Hung S3

CHICAGOHBO finally broke through with their first major new comedy successes since “Entourage” this year with the amazing “Girls” and “Veep.” There were a few growing pains between the critical darlings however, a trio of shows that never quite took off like their breakthrough network hoped they would. And yet there are things to like about at least two of them and they probably have some loyal audiences who want to own them on Blu-ray. Now they can.

Interview: Christopher Abbott, Todd Louiso, Sarah Koskoff on ‘Hello I Must Be Going’

CHICAGO – Flawed females are often feared by Hollywood because of their questionable commercial appeal. Yet 2012 has provided moviegoers and TV fans with a rich assortment of characters—led by Lena Dunham’s Hannah Horvath on HBO’s “Girls”—that prove women can be every bit as immature, developmentally arrested and utterly fascinating as the guys.

Film News: Chicago Filmmaker Danny Rhodes to Direct Horror Pic ‘Released’

Released News Brief

CHICAGO – Chicago filmmaker Danny Rhodes has been tapped to direct his first feature film, “Released,” a thriller which has the potential to grow into a long-running horror franchise. Willow Road Entertainment and Rhodes’s new company, Rhodesclosed Productions, are planning to shoot the film in 2013. According to Rhodes, the budget will be between $750,000 and $1.3 million.

TV Review: Brilliant, Razor-Sharp ‘The Thick of It’ Returns to Hulu

CHICAGO – Should this even be called a “TV Review”? Will we one day write “Hulu Reviews”? Or “Streaming Reviews”? Technically, “The Thick of It” is still a TV show as it premieres in the U.K. on the old-fashioned platform. It’s just in the United States that Armando Iannucci’s brilliant political comedy is premiering exclusively on Hulu and Hulu Plus.

TV Review: Great Performance From Kenneth Branagh Anchors ‘Wallander’

CHICAGO – The great Kenneth Branagh delivers yet again with a new series of “Wallander” films on PBS under the banner of “Masterpiece: Mystery!,” starting tomorrow night, September 9, 2012. These are accomplished, adult tales of loss, guilt, and mystery that should satisfy viewers hooked by the first two “Wallander” runs previously aired on PBS.

Video Game Review: ‘Transformers: Fall of Cybertron’ is More Than Meets the Eye

CHICAGO – Considering its iconic nature, it’s funny that “The Transformers” franchise has never been about its story. Outside of Optimus Prime dying, or that time Ultra Magnus fought the junk-bots to a Weird Al song, casual fans would be hard pressed to remember a specific episode or occurrence in the series that really stuck with them.

Exclusive Portrait: Ali Larter Hosts Fashion’s Night Out Red Carpet in Chicago

Ali Lartner at Fashion's Night Out Red in Chicago

CHICAGO – Actress Ali Larter (“Final Destination,” “Resident Evil: Extinction,” TV’s “Heroes”) glams up the red carpet as the host of Fashion’s Night Out in Chicago at the 900 N. Michigan Ave. shops on Sept. 6, 2012. The HollywoodChicago.com lens was there to bring you this exclusive Ali Larter portrait!

Blu-ray Review: Clever Thriller ‘Headhunters’ Deserves Wider Audience

Headhunters

CHICAGO – “Headhunters” is such a clever little thriller. It’s old-fashioned in the sense that it features a small number of characters in a game of cat-and-cat-and-mouse with two-guys-and-a-girl structure but it’s also very technologically advanced. It takes the best traits of the ’70s thriller and marries them to ’10s technology. And it’s so strikingly well-made and confidently directed. The end is a little disappointing but the trip there is fun ride.

Blu-ray Review: Fourth Season of ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Marks Creative Return

Sons of Anarchy: S4

CHICAGO – The third season of “Sons of Anarchy” was an absolute mess, the kind of misguided, repetitive disaster that can sometimes kill a great show. And yet the creators and team behind this hit FX series completely bounced back in season four, recently released on Blu-ray and DVD. With more emphasis on the dark family secrets of Clay (Ron Perlman), Gemma (Katey Sagal), and Jax (Charlie Hunnam), “Sons of Anarchy” arguably reached its peak this season and I expect the upcoming fifth season (come back Tuesday for a review) to top even this one. Catch up before getting back on your ride.

Blu-ray Review: Awesome 5-Disc Set For ‘Terminator Anthology’

Terminator Anthology

CHICAGO – It’s incredibly easy to make jokes about the 3rd and 4th subpar films in the “Terminator Anthology” but that’s missing the point. Yes, the series goes downhill a bit after the amazing “T2” and slides even further in the pretty awful McG finale but collectors don’t care. This is a set, exclusive to Best Buy and the WB Online Shop, for true collectors, those of you who get excited for nifty packaging and the ability to hold a whole series in your hands. It’s a great box set even if not all four movies could correctly be called “great.”

Blu-ray Review: New Packages For Extended Editions of ‘The Lord of the Rings’

Lord of the Rings Blu-Ray

CHICAGO – Some Blu-ray re-releases are more essential than others. Often they add special features, remaster the video and/or audio, or offer previews of new films that might be related. There’s little of any of that with the new, repackaged, stand-alone Blu-ray versions of “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, three releases that are simply must-own…unless you already own them.

Film Review: Deadly Dull ‘The Words’ Has Nothing to Say

CHICAGO – It may seem like easy bait for a critic but the quote whores supplied a dozen or so words for the mysterious ads for the new drama “The Words” and so I’d like to play their little game. I have a few words of my own – “Dull.” “Inert.” “Pretentious.” “Uninteresting.” “Inconsistent.” “Craptastic.” Put those on your ad.

Film Review: ‘Samsara’ is a Film That Will Be Whatever You Want

CHICAGO – It is revitalizing to take a break from traditional cinema, and the new artistic film “Samsara” is a non-linear quasi-documentary and travelogue that is a parade of images contemplating existence and the beauty around us. Who doesn’t need that tonic of meditation every so often?

Film Review: Stunning, Creative Vision of ‘Looper’

CHICAGO – It’s so refreshing to see a talented filmmaker that has been allowed to bring his unique vision to the screen without compromise. You know the feeling when you’re watching a product of a marketing focus group or producer interference and when you’re seeing something fresh, new, and personal.

Interviews: Celebrities from 1980s to Beyond at ‘The Hollywood Show’

Aileen Quinn, photo by Joe Arce

CHICAGO – With roles as diverse as Screech, Little Orphan Annie, Jake (from “Jake and the Fatman”) and Angie in the film “Kick-Ass,” the era from the 1980s and beyond are nicely personified by Dustin Diamond (“Saved by the Bell”), Aileen Quinn (“Annie”) Joe Penny (Jake) and Yancy Butler (“Kick-Ass”).

Film Review: Kirsten Dunst, Lizzy Caplan in Mediocre ‘Bachelorette’

CHICAGO – “Bachelorette,” now playing On Demand (and doing quite well on that format) and opening in theaters tomorrow, is a modestly successful comedy with some very talented stars stuck with an incredibly inconsistent script.

CHICAGO – “Bachelorette,” now playing On Demand (and doing quite well on that format) and opening in theaters tomorrow, is a modestly successful comedy with some very talented stars stuck with an incredibly inconsistent script. The performers do their best and there are some scenes that work but the overall piece is remarkably forgettable, reminding viewers of “Bridesmaids” and “The Hangover” while failing to match either in terms of laughs.

Film Review: ‘[REC] 3: Genesis’ Showers Wedding Guests in Blood

CHICAGO – Gorehounds, unite! You fans of the slimy red stuff, those of you who love decapitations and disembowlings while you munch your popcorn, and those looking for something that feels honestly alive after inert horror films like “The Apparition” and “The Awakening” are required to support the ridiculous splatterfest “[REC] 3: Genesis,” opening in New York and L.A. this weekend and now available On Demand.
