‘[REC] 3: Genesis’ Showers Wedding Guests in Blood
Submitted by BrianTT on September 6, 2012 - 11:45amRating: 3.5/5.0 |
CHICAGO – Gorehounds, unite! You fans of the slimy red stuff, those of you who love decapitations and disembowlings while you munch your popcorn, and those looking for something that feels honestly alive after inert horror films like “The Apparition” and “The Awakening” are required to support the ridiculous splatterfest “[REC] 3: Genesis,” opening in New York and L.A. this weekend and now available On Demand.
Blu-ray Review: Abysmally Unfunny ‘Piranha 3DD’ Doubles the Awfulness
Submitted by mattmovieman on September 6, 2012 - 8:27amCHICAGO – “Piranha 3DD” is such a pathetic excuse for entertainment that it doesn’t even deserve to be regarded as a film. It’s just soft-core porn stuffed with shoddy special effects. The titillation factor is zilch and the scare factor is even lower than that. Even frat boys under the influence of multiple drugs may have difficulty finding this dreck watchable, let alone funny.
Blu-ray Review: ‘Think Like a Man’ Offers Zero Insight into Relationships
Submitted by mattmovieman on September 6, 2012 - 8:22amCHICAGO – Steve Harvey seems to be everywhere these days. He’s hosting morning radio programs, headlining “Family Feud,” launching his own daytime talk show and even hawking the latest attractions On Demand. Yet for all of his media exposure, the man has yet to prove that he’s much of an authority on anything. He’s basically an average comic blessed by the kiss of Oprah.
Blu-ray Review: Great Release For ‘The Pirates! A Band of Misfits’
Submitted by BrianTT on September 5, 2012 - 7:47pmCHICAGO – Aardman’s Animation “The Pirates! A Band of Misfits” is a wonderfully clever slice of family entertainment that’s probably second to only “ParaNorman” when it comes to the best animated cinema of 2012. Sony has treated the film and its fans very well with an extras-packed special edition of the Peter Lord film that comes with a spectacular short film, 3D version, UltraViolet edition, and more. It’s one of the best family Blu-rays on New Releases shelves right now.
Video Game Review: ‘New Super Mario Bros. 2’ Offers Old-Fashioned Diversion For New-Gen Platform
Submitted by BrianTT on September 5, 2012 - 7:13pmCHICAGO – One can never argue that Nintendo doesn’t know how to treat their most beloved properties. Every few months seems to produce a game featuring one of the icons of the most important video game company in history and the latest is “New Super Mario Bros. 2,” a tweaked version of the classic now presented in 3D on the Nintendo 3DS.
DVD Review: Mediocre Release For Reboot Season of ‘Two and a Half Men’
Submitted by BrianTT on September 5, 2012 - 6:49pmCHICAGO – It’s funny that after all of the build-up, all of the headlines, and all of the hype that the ninth season of “Two and a Half Men” proved to be so lackluster.
Interviews: Those 1970s Celebrities at ‘The Hollywood Show’
Submitted by PatrickMcD on September 5, 2012 - 6:33pmCHICAGO – When “That ’70’s Show” was merely a twinkle in the eye of Ashton Kutcher’s pappy, there were real TV, film and music celebrities actually working in that disco decade. Denny Laine (of Paul McCartney and “Wings”), Eric Shea (“The Poseidon Adventure”) and Richard Anderson (“The Six Million Dollar Man”) helped to define that freak show era.

Video Game Review: Gameplay Refinements Elevate New ‘Madden NFL 13’
Submitted by BrianTT on September 5, 2012 - 10:25amCHICAGO – “Madden NFL 13” opens with a rousing monologue from everyone’s favorite justice-obstructing Ravens linebacker, Ray Lewis. Sitting in a dimly lit and smokey locker room, he extols the virtue of hard work, tenacity, and pride, as images from the prior NFL season are projected on the lockers before seamlessly transforming into footage from the game, highlighting its shiny new physics engine.
Interview: Versatile Indie Actress Sophia Takal Makes Directorial Debut in ‘Green’
Submitted by mattmovieman on September 5, 2012 - 8:43amCHICAGO – In a mere four-year span, New York actress/filmmaker Sophia Takal has sported a remarkable versatility. Since 2009, she’s acted in ten feature films and is set to star in many more. Her first lead role was the titular heroine in Lawrence Michael Levine’s 2010 gem, “Gabi on the Roof in July.” Takal and Levine’s offscreen status as a couple enhanced the chemistry between their characters, siblings Gabi and Sam.
Interviews: 1960s Celebrities of TV, Film at ‘The Hollywood Show’
Submitted by PatrickMcD on September 5, 2012 - 2:11amCHICAGO – In the 1960s, network television became the ‘cool fire’ that families gathered around, and the array of trends and shows in that era had an odd but flavorful variety. Lee Meriwether (Catwoman from the 1966 ‘Batman movie), Kathy Garver (Cissy in the sitcom ‘Family Affair’) and Robert Colbert (ensemble player on the TV drama ‘The Time Tunnel’) represented those shows.
Blu-ray Review: ‘Monsieur Lazhar’ Stands as One of the Year’s Best Films
Submitted by mattmovieman on September 4, 2012 - 9:35amCHICAGO – When the Academy nominates a film before it’s even been released in America, they end up doing it a disservice. Once the film finally shows up on American screens, the Oscar nominations have already faded from memory. This method also allows the Academy to ignore all the great films that audiences have actually seen during the past twelve months.
Blu-ray Review: ‘Apartment 143’ is No Home For Scares
Submitted by BrianTT on September 4, 2012 - 8:46amCHICAGO – I was hoping that the practically straight-to-Blu-ray “Apartment 143,” written and produced by “Buried” and “Red Lights” director Rodrigo Cortes, would be a clever horror alternative that just didn’t find the right path to mainstream success but was truly worth your time. My hopes were dashed against the rocks of cliched storytelling, awful acting, and generic direction about ten minutes into this mess. A few decent ideas in an interesting climax save it from complete disaster but you’re likely to have turned it off by that time and visited a scarier location.

Interviews: Here’s the Story of ‘The Brady Bunch’ in the Present Day
Submitted by PatrickMcD on September 3, 2012 - 7:04pmCHICAGO – In 1969, amid the turbulent decade of the 1960s, a landmark TV sitcom made its debut with the simple phrase, “Here’s the story…” “The Brady Bunch” has endured in entertainment culture ever since, and four of the actors who comprised the Bunch – Barry Williams (Greg), Christopher Knight (Peter), Mike Lookinland (Bobby) and Susan Olsen (Cindy) have evolved to adulthood with varied interests and pursuits.

Interview: An Invitation from Mike Birbiglia to ‘Sleepwalk with Me’
Submitted by PatrickMcD on September 3, 2012 - 4:16pmCHICAGO – The comedian with the tough-to-pronounce name, Mike Birbiglia, hits the next stage with a new film based on his one man show, “Sleepwalk with Me.” Produced and co-written by Ira Glass of “This American Life,” the story of the serious subject of a sleepwalking disorder creates both mordant laughs and poignant moments.
Film Review: ‘Cure For Pain: The Mark Sandman Story’ Places Spotlight on Great Band
Submitted by BrianTT on September 3, 2012 - 9:31amRating: 3.5/5.0 |
CHICAGO – I can still remember when I first heard the band Morphine. It was the title track from their stellar 1993 album, “Cure For Pain,” which also serves as the title for a strong new rock doc about this underrated and underappreciated trio that’s now playing On Demand.

TV Review: A&E Mini-Series Remake of ‘Coma’ is Lifeless
Submitted by BrianTT on September 3, 2012 - 9:17amCHICAGO – When I heard that A&E was airing a remake of Michael Crichton’s wonderful slice of ’70s health care paranoia “Coma” (based on the book by Robin Cook), I thought, “That makes perfect sense.” With our current national focus on what’s going to happen to us when we get sick along with the continued health issues of the aging Baby Boomer generation, a “Coma” remake was a great idea.
Film Review: Real-Life Backstory of ‘The Possession’ More Titillating Than Cinematic Dybbuk Dramatization
Submitted by HollywoodChicago.com on September 2, 2012 - 11:43pmCHICAGO – A film marketing itself as being “based on a true story” doesn’t hold the same teeth it once did. With truly original stories a financial high risk for Hollywood and many films leaning toward being based on a best-selling novel, the genre that is based on a true story or “inspired by true events” has increasingly taken creative liberties.

Submitted by PatrickMcD on September 2, 2012 - 10:13amCHICAGO – Bring up the name Ed Asner, and immediately his legendary TV character Lou Grant comes to mind. Asner created the only TV character to successfully transition from a sitcom – “Mary Tyler Moore” – to the cutting-edge TV drama “Lou Grant.” But Asner has also been steadily working since those days, including his latest film “Let Go.”

Film Review: Mike Birbiglia Steps Up in ‘Sleepwalk with Me’
Submitted by PatrickMcD on September 1, 2012 - 7:48amCHICAGO – It’s exciting to witness a breakthrough with a new film artist. The comedian Mike Birbiglia has adapted his one-man show, “Sleepwalk with Me,” into a movie, and the result is a naturalistic performance piece that plays both like a documentary and Woody Allen’s during the “Annie Hall” period. Birbiglia gets a little help from some friends like Lauren Ambrose, Kirsten Schaal, Wyatt Cenac and Amy Schumer.
