We saw “Casablanca” and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” as a double feature at the Music Box Theatre a couple of Valentine’s Days ago.

::side note: They have GREAT butter on their popcorn::

It was absolutely DIVINE. My two favorite films (in that order) on the big screen in an old-Hollywood-esque theatre? How happy was I?

The majesty of “Casablanca” was that much more so in its full splendor. It was also so great to be in an audience that appreciated its wit (even though we did have our fair share of whisperers —- LOUD whisperers no less —- which surprised me in that sort of atmosphere). The boyfriend at the time had never seen the movie before, so it was great talking to him about it afterwards.

>>>SPOILER ALERT!!!<<<

“I can’t believe he let her go!” he said about Casablanca. “She wanted to go, you could tell & he wanted her to stay, but he just let her go!”

As for Breakfast at Tiffany’s, I was pleasantly surprised to discover -but didn’t catch any murmuring to suggest anyone else noticed- that there were lines of dialogue, camera shots, & even full on clips of scenes that aren’t on the DVD or on the TCM/AMC version of the film. It was widescreen, too, which was INCREDIBLE to see … the way Audrey’s in the foreground while George Peppard lays on the bed,

>>>SPOILER ALERT<<<

the shot where she gets out of jail & immediately stops in front of the bars to light up a cigarette, the actual showing of what the woman who is “handsomely paid” is doing at that nightclub where Holly gets “very drunk indeed” … it was thrilling to see it all up there. The party scene made THAT much more hysterical as you can truly see & hear all of the madness going on….

My ass thrummed during the movie because they had old-time seats, but other than that, it was SPLENDID. I highly recommend it to any film lover. I had never been to the Music Box (shame on me) before, but will be back for sure.

So go out & take a look-see at some old favorites. You never know what you’re going to discover!
