Although a Harry Knowles rave means it’s a day that ends in “Y,” he calls Cloverfield “fucking brilliant. It’s what we were told it was going to be. An intimate perspective on an impossibly grand scale human disaster beyond most human levels of comprehension.”

'Star Trek' teaser didn't show before tonight's 'Cloverfield'

The much-anticipated “Star Trek” teaser trailer didn’t show before Wednesday night’s “Cloverfield” advance movie screening in Chicago. In fact, there were no previews at all. The film just came straight on.

There was another press screening for “Cloverfield” in Chicago on Tuesday, but I don’t know if the “Star Trek” teaser showed there or not.

After we scooped the teaser trailer description for “Star Trek,” I was really looking forward to seeing it, too.

First Negative Review

Dave Poland gives his brief thoughts in the form of a pop quiz:

What movie:
A) Has a credit sequence that runs more than 15% of the overall length of the film?
B) Has no character development deeper than a D cup?
C) Uses Mumblecore conceits to do nothing but scam the audience? (Welcome to Mumble-Hor.)
D) Makes Poseidon look accomplished with many of the same gags
E) Has a monster that could have been bought at a Star Trek TV auction.
F) Doesn’t have a single moment as compelling as the girl crying into the lens in Blair Witch.
G) Is desperate to be The Host, but forgets to establish any characters that you care about.
H) Has the greatest scoring of the credits sequence in history
I) Is so completely vacuous that a few smart people will mistake it for meaningful.
J) All Of The Above

Good luck to you all! Winner gets to not see the film!

And Jeff Wells adds his preliminary thoughts.

Cloverfield is a monster film unlike any other — a complete original, but no less of a rock’ em-sock ‘em for that…. Cloverfield is a post-9.11 fever dream. As if a person who’s been through 9.11 in lower Manhattan has gone to bed traumatized and shaking with dread, and this is the dream they have. Illogical, ferocious, madball, all-engulfing….but very much of our world. Not It Came From Beneath The Sea but It Came From Someplace Deep in the National Psyche.
