From the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas, an interesting statistic was reported by Yi-Wyn Yen at the Techland blog:

Last month Veoh, an Internet TV startup that offers shows from “30 Rock” to “The Young and the Restless” online, discovered a telling statistic about consumers. Of the 23 million viewers who visited the site, a whopping 40 percent of them were watching shows on the Web during prime-time hours.

“Given the option, instead of sitting in front of the TV watching cable or satellite broadcasts, they were sitting in front of their computers watching Internet shows,” says Dmitry Shapiro, founder and chief innovation officer of Veoh.

Of course, the AMPTP will still tell you that Internet TV is only promotional.

My only experience with this

My only experience with this is MLB.tv. I bought it one year because I thought I’d watch my Cardinals play from my computer instead of paying way more for it at home.

There were some tech glitches with it, but ultimately I canceled it for the same reason I also choose not to watch movies on my computer: I don’t want to watch video for more than a few minutes on my computer. I’d rather have a TV or the theater for that so I can get the real experience on a bigger screen and with better sound.

That said, I know some people will disagree and I know Internet TV is only growing. I just personally don’t choose to watch it that way.
