Blu-Ray Review: ‘Seven Pounds’ With Will Smith is Manipulative Melodrama
Submitted by BrianTT on April 2, 2009 - 12:05pmBlu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0 |
CHICAGO – There’s arguably no bigger star on Earth than Will Smith but even the greats need a misfire to bring them crashing to the ground. “Seven Pounds” is a mess, a film of conflicting tones and arguably offensive themes, a movie that moves beyond traditional melodrama in just the first few minutes and keeps flying into the over-the-top stratosphere. The Sony Blu-Ray release is impressive, but the movie itself is not.

DVD Review: ‘Timecrimes’ Will Be a Glorious Find For Sci-Fi, Horror Fans
Submitted by BrianTT on April 1, 2009 - 5:46pmDVD Rating: 4.0/5.0 |
CHICAGO – There was a small window of time there where it looked like the Nacho Vigalondo’s excellent “Timecrimes” might be the next foreign language hit on the arthouse circuit. If not “Pan’s Labyrinth“-big maybe as buzzed about as “Tell No One” or “Let the Right One In”. That never happened (it didn’t even make $40k in theaters) but audiences are going to find this above-average genre pic on DVD.
Interview: Angie Dickinson on the Big Break, The Rat Pack, ‘Police Woman’
Submitted by PatrickMcD on April 1, 2009 - 3:55pmCHICAGO – Angie Dickinson has brought her charm and magnetism to a career that has spanned from the 1950s/’60s era – she was featured, for example, in the original Rat Pack-starring “Ocean’s 11” (1960) – to grittier movie roles in such cult classics as as “Point Blank” (1967), Brian DePalma’s “Dressed to Kill” (1980) and Ronald Reagan’s last film,”The Killers” (1964).

CHICAGO – “In Plain Sight” may not get the buzz or press of other cable hits like “Burn Notice” or “The Closer” and the show still needs some ironing out to truly live up to its potential but I watched every episode of this USA Network action drama when it aired and anxiously look forward to the new season (which we’ll review here on or just before its April 19th premiere) for one reason, Mary McCormack.

The festival circuit has created many an independent film hit but most of them don’t make their way to even Chicago much less the small towns of America. Now you can bring the film festival experience home with IFC Direct.
