CHICAGO – Apple announced today, according to MTV.com, that the new single by Lady Gaga, “Born This Way,” is the fastest-selling in the history of iTunes. It’s Lady Gaga’s world. We just live in it.

Apple doesn’t often give out sales data but they couldn’t keep this smash hit un-press released, announcing that “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga has sold 1 million tracks in just five days, hitting #1 in 23 countries. Of course, “Born This Way” also went straight to #1 on the Billboard chart, notching another historical stat — the 1,000th song to hit #1 in history. Given Lady Gaga’s amazing ability at publicity, one has to wonder if she somehow didn’t time that as well. Or she’s just lucky. It is only the 19th song to ever debut at #1.

Queen Gaga said to Billboard, “It is a tremendous honor to be the 1000th no. 1 on Billboard…I would be silly not to say this is the greatest honor of my career. … I am so humbled and so honored and overwhelmed by the reception to ‘Born This Way.’ [It] has been so life-changing for me as an artist, and between Billboard and the international number ones and the radio numbers. … I couldn’t be more blessed to have the fans that I have.

One more stat — “Born This Way” debuted at #6 on the Billboard radio airplay chart, the highest debut since the charts were reconfigured in 1998.

Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” (the album of the same name) will not hit stores until May 23rd. Count the days. Until then, get your copy of the song here — Born This Way.
