TV News: HBO Renews ‘Game of Thrones’ For Second Season

CHICAGO – After only one episode, HBO has already decided to renew their highly-acclaimed “Game of Thrones” for a second season. We were just sent the press release from the network, touting the fantastic reviews, although the premiere’s numbers were a bit disappointing comparatively.

According to preliminary numbers posted by TV By the Numbers, “Game of Thrones” notched a 1.6 prelimary household rating for its initial 8pm CST airing, which is quite far off the 2.8 preliminary household rating for the premiere of “Boardwalk Empire.”

HBO did note, however, that the multiple airings on the first night totaled an impressive 4.2 million viewers and more are sure to tune in over the course of the week and through On Demand.

Michael Lombardo, President of HBO Programming, made the announcement, saying, “We are delighted by the way David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have brought George R.R. Martin’s amazing book series to the screen, and thrilled by the support of the media and our viewers. This is the continuation of an exciting creative partnership.”

TV Guide called the show a “a crowning triumph” and “brilliant” while The Hollywood Reporter noted the “excellent storytelling, superb acting and stunning visual effects.” The New York Post said, “art directing, acting and incredible sets are as breathtaking as the massive scope of the series” while our review here at HollywoodChicago.com called it “one of the best-looking programs to ever air on television.”

“Game of Thrones” airs on Sunday nights at 8pm CST.
