TV News: SyFy Cancels ‘Eureka,’ ABC Axes ‘Desperate Housewives’
CHICAGO – SyFy fans can officially start a countdown of episodes remaining for of the network’s biggest shows. While plans were seemingly moving forward for the network to renew the sixth season of their hit show “Eureka” after SyFy ordered six new episodes to be made last week, reconsideration has brought about the cancellation of the show.
In an official statement sent to EW, the network apologized for the sudden cancellation of the sixth season, while still encouraging fans to watch the fifth, and now final season. “After painstaking consideration, we have had to make the difficult business decision to not order a season six of Eureka. But Eureka is not over yet. There is a new holiday episode this December and 12 stellar episodes set to debut next year, marking its fifth season and six memorable years on Syfy.”
“Eureka,” a show about a group of geniuses that all work in a small town to build futuristic inventions for governmental benefit, was once SyFy’s highest rated show until it was beat out by the newer supernatural series “Warehouse 13.” Still, “Eureka” was one of the top rated shows SyFy had to offer with a loyal fan base that must be disappointed by this news.
While the reality of cancellation will hit home, “Eureka” still has five new episodes left in the fourth season, currently playing on Mondays at 7PM CST, as well as an entire 12 episode fifth season. With cancellation news coming this early, hopefully show creators and writers can create a proper ending for the show’s final season.
In similar news, the ABC drama/comedy “Desperate Housewives” will also be coming to an end. The ABC Entertainment Group announced the eighth season, premiering September 25th, will be the last walk down Wisteria Lane. The series that began with a bang, winning Golden Globes for ‘Best Television Series- Musical or Comedy’ in the first two seasons, is said to “go out on a high” by creator/showrunner Marc Cherry.
Eva Longoria, one of the show’s stars, tweeted “It’s confirmed! We are filming our last season of Desperate Housewives! I am so grateful for what the show has given me! We always knew we wanted to end on top and I thank ABC for giving us our victory lap! And a special thanks to Marc Cherry who forever changed my life!” No word yet if Longoria was actually screaming this news or if she just prefers exclamation points.
