CHICAGOFOX made a lot of TV viewers happy this afternoon when, on the strength of its first two outings, they renewed “New Girl” for a full season. The Zooey Deschanel sitcom will be on until at least Spring of 2012, making it the first new series to get a full-season order from its network. Congratulations to the whole “New Girl” team.

Like most shows, FOX had ordered 13 episodes to start but have picked up the order for an extra 11 to take the first season of “New Girl” to a typical 24.

Kevin Reilly broke the news via press release — “We love the charming Zooey Deschanel and the entire cast, we’re knocked out with the work that Liz Meriwether and the whole staff is doing and we are really psyched about the upcoming episodes in the pipeline. It’s great that audiences have responded so positively so far and we’re confident that even more people will embrace the show – and more comedy on FOX – this season.

This is not much of a surprise at all given the fact that “New Girl” premiered with the highest ratings for a new FOX sitcom in 10 years. It is Tuesday’s #1 series among Adults 18-49 and the number #1 new series on any night among Adults 18-34, Women 18-34, and Teens — highly-coveted demographics that FOX was trying to court with this new show. Nice work.

From the press release:

In next week’s all-new episode, “Wedding,” airing Tuesday, Oct. 4 (9:01-9:31 PM ET/PT), the guys are invited to a wedding of a mutual friend. NICK (Jake Johnson), fearful he will run into his ex-girlfriend Caroline (guest star Mary Elizabeth Ellis), asks JESS (Deschanel) to be his date. Meanwhile, WINSTON (Lamorne Morris) takes his role as an usher very seriously and gets competitive on the dance floor with a young guest. SCHMIDT (Max Greenfield) not only catches the eye of a beautiful woman (guest star Katie Cassidy), but also his “frenemy” Gretchen (guest star Natasha Lyonne) whom he hooks up with at every wedding reception.

The next two all-new episodes of NEW GIRL air at special times. In “Cece Crashes,” airing on a special night on Wednesday, Oct. 12 (9:30-10:00 PM ET/PT), CECE (Hannah Simone) convinces Jess that Nick likes her more than just as a roommate and Schmidt tries to seal the deal with Cece. In “Naked,” airing at a special time at 9:30-10:00 PM ET/PT on Tuesday, Oct. 18, Jess accidentally walks in on a naked Nick, sending his self-confidence to an all-time low – just after an attractive co-worker (guest star Lake Bell) agrees to go out on a date with him.

Among other upcoming guest stars on NEW GIRL is Justin Long (“Live Free & Die Hard,” “Going The Distance”), playing the role of a music teacher who catches the eye of Jess.

Created and written by Liz Meriwether (“No Strings Attached”), NEW GIRL follows a young woman (Deschanel) who, after a bad breakup, moves in with three single guys she doesn’t know, changing all of their lives in unexpected ways.
