CHICAGO – Only two episodes into the second season of the HBO series “Boardwalk Empire” and the network has seen enough to order up a third season of the show. After critical appeal from the first season and even more praise from the second season debut, HBO is ready to get behind the 1920s series for what could be a long ride.

The news came this afternoon in a press release from HBO and their president of programming Michael Lombardo. Lombardo expressed his excitement for a third season in the press release: “Following a triumphant first season, I was eager to see what Terry Winter, Martin Scorsese and the rest of their stellar team had in store, and they continue to surpass our highest expectations,” said Lombardo. “The response from the media and our viewers has been extremely gratifying.”

The media and viewer response Lombardo talks about includes a perfect five out of five rating from Hollywood Chicago’s very own Brian Tallerico for the premiere episode of the second season, where he said “one of the best programs on HBO has gotten even better.”

Viewership for the show cannot lie either, as the show averages a gross audience of 10.7 million, making it easily one of HBO’s most popular series.

The pickup of another season falls in line with “True Blood,” “Game of Thrones,” and “Treme” as series that HBO renewed as well as the other new drama series that the network has given the green light to, including “Luck,” “Veep,” “Girls,” “Life’s Too Short” and Aaron Sorkin’s new untitled series.

So, “Boardwalk Empire” fans can rejoice at knowing that not only are there are still ten more episodes to see from season two of the series, but another set of episodes will be in the works after this season comes to a close.
