“We Bought a Zoo” is a funny, inspiring and true story about the magical power of family to persevere in the face of extraordinary challenges. This is acclaimed filmmaker Cameron Crowe’s (“Jerry Maguire”) first motion picture for all audiences and stars Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson and Thomas Haden Church.

Being there.

A challenge in my family was moving back to my parents’ house to become their caregiver in a sense. Both parents are seniors and now more than ever they need someone to watch over them, make sure if anything is needed, I am there to provide assistance. It was hard to get back to being under their roof, but family is all about being there when most needed, and I am glad to be there for them.

Family Challenge

Our biggest challenge was getting my son out of debt and keeping him debt free. Like a typical college student his expectations on his future earnings were great and using credit to party was so much fun and it was easier to keep it a secret from us….well the debt kept piling.. Thanks to our help he is debt free now , but with bad credit for the next few years. Hopefully he learned his lesson.

What’s the greatest family challenge you’ve overcome?

My divorce was final the day after Valentine’s day in 2005 and 2 mos to the day (Tax Day) I started chemo for HD Lymphoma. I am about to start my 3rd challenge raising a child on my own - I am less than a month from my due date.

Our Exploding Toilet

During heavy rains the toilet in a bathroom in the hallway between our kitchen and dining room occasionally erupts like Mount Vesuvius, spewing dozens of gallons of filthy rainwater into our house. Packing dozens of towels around the toilet and staging all the tools needed to shunt the water through the kitchen and out into the breezeway has become a family tradition. Even our four year old can wield a big squeegee with the practiced skill of a high-rise window washer.

I even started buying special absorbent “pillows” that are used in industrial settings where chemical spills are a common problem. During the summer when thunderstorms are prevalent, we’d all huddle around the TV and hang on every word Tom Skilling said, rushing to pack the absorbents in the bathroom if he issued a thunderstorm warning.

After five different sewer experts analyzed the problem, we finally got a guy to come out with a sophisticated fiber optic camera that he inserted into the sewer in the yard. There was a sinister partial blockage hidden in the bend of a pipe that was big enough to prevent rainwater to flow out during heavy rain but small enough to allow sewage to flow normally during typical weather. He brought in some crazy contraption that chewed through the blockage.

Now, during heavy rain, our hearts beat a little faster, our fight or flight mechanism at the ready, but it appears that we once again have a normal, non-exploding toilet like everybody else.

What was the Greatest Family Challenge to Overcome?

The realization that we all are mortal, even those that, early on in life, were immortal. Like my Parents.
