CHICAGO – In a battle between action/thriller and Disney/animation, Mark Wahlberg’s new film “Contraband” came out on top. Battling all weekend against the 3D re-release of “Beauty and the Beast 3D,” “Contraband” was able to come in at number one after earning an estimated $24.1 million in its first weekend in theaters.

“Contraband” was able to finish at the top as “Beauty and the Beast 3D” was only able to earn an estimated $18.5 million at the box office. This may come as a bit of a disappointment to Disney, as their re-release of “The Lion King” last September in 3D was able to earn $30.2 million in its first weekend back in theaters, and even $22 million the weekend after that.

Last week’s number one film, “The Devil Inside,” was not as successful this week. After making $33.7 million on its first weekend, the film dropped 77% with an estimated $7.9 million in its second weekend, good enough for sixth place. Perhaps word-of-mouth got out saying that the film is actually not that good.

The weekend’s other new release, “Joyful Noise,” finished at number four in the box office with an estimated $11.3 million. The film finished behind “Contraband,” “Beauty and the Beast 3D,” and “Mission: Impossible- Ghost Protocol,” which took its total gross to almost $187 million. This was the fifth straight weekend that “Ghost Protocol” finished in the top three.

Will “Contraband” win again next weekend, or will it lose to one of the new releases of “Underworld: Awakening,” “Haywire,” “Coriolanus,” or “Red Tails,” or even one of the current releases? We will have to wait until next Sunday to find out what film reigns supreme in the third weekend of 2012.
