TV News: ‘Revolution’ Starts Strong on NBC, ‘The Mob Doctor’ Bombs on FOX

CHICAGO – The HollywoodChicago.com prediction that “The Mob Doctor” looks likely to be the first cancellation of the new year was proven correct in last night’s overnight ratings as the FOX drama premiered to anemic numbers against only “The Voice” on NBC. Once “2 Broke Girls” and “Dancing with the Stars” enter the timeslot, it’s only a matter of time before the axe swings. Meanwhile, “Revolution” opened very strongly and held its audience well.

The good news first. Buoyed by a night-winning performance from “The Voice,” “Revolution” opened with a 7.9 rating and a 13 share in the 9pm CST time slot, winning the hour. Time will tell if audiences will stick with the show but only slight erosion in the 9:30 half-hour indicates that people liked what they saw enough to stick to the end. With “The Sing-Off” and “The Playboy Club” delivering hilariously bad numbers a year ago to “The Voice” and “Revolution” winning the night this year. As many problems as NBC has had, turning Mondays around (at least until CBS and ABC return with new programming) has to be considered a major success.

On the other side of the TV coin, “The Mob Doctor” lost 34% of the audience who tuned in to see the season premiere of “Bones,” notching only a 3.7 rating in the 8pm CST slot. Compare to a 4.1 last year for “Hell’s Kitchen” and this is a total disaster. As with most shows, it seems likely to lose a bit in week two and that will likely be amplified by new competition on CBS and ABC. The clock is ticking…
