Blu-ray Review: Fantastic ‘Looper’ Gets Great Blu-ray Release
CHICAGO – I clearly loved “Looper” as evidenced by my initial review, interview with Rian Johnson, placement of Emily Blunt on my Best Supporting Performances of 2012 piece, and putting it #9 on my Best of 2012. Watching it again in glorious HD, I had a surprising thought given all of the above — I may have underrated it. Johnson’s movie is a genre masterpiece, a stylish, smart, fun, poignant examination of personal responsibility and man’s ability to change. The first time through is so loaded down with story that one can better appreciate the technical elements and performances on repeat viewing. And the excellent special features on the Blu-ray release make it the first must-own of 2013.
Rating: 5.0/5.0 |
We’ve written so much about the film here that there’s little reason to rehash and so I’ll jump right to the special material. The most notable will be over half an hour of deleted scenes, some of which are truly stellar and most of which involve Kid Blue (Noah Segan). There’s a procedural sequence with Blue tracking his prey that’s truly great, although I understand why they were all cut for pacing. The release also includes a commentary with Johnson, Joseph-Gordon Levitt, and Emily Blunt that’s just delightful. It enforces my love for these three creative forces, one of the best directors and two of the best actors working today.

Synopsis:
In the futuristic action thriller Looper, time travel has been invented - but it’s illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they send their target 30 years into the past, where a “looper” - a hired gun, like Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) - is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good… until the day the mob decides to “close the loop,” sending back Joe’s future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination.
