Blu-ray Review: Beautifully Restored Edition of James Cameron’s ‘The Terminator’
CHICAGO – I have to admit that I greeted the new Blu-ray edition of James Cameron’s wildly-influential “The Terminator” with a raised eyebrow and heavy dose of skepticism. Another release for a movie that has hit the home market over and over again felt like a cash grab. A restoration? Sure. From the first minute, “The Terminator” feels new in this edition, a gorgeously remastered HD transfer of a genre classic.
Rating: 4.5/5.0 |
As for the film itself, I’m as surprised at its lasting power as I am at the amazing transfer. I guess there’s always a part of me that thinks that “The Terminator” will come off dated. I’m sure that it does for some young viewers (I can’t believe it’s almost thirty years old) but I would challenge them to point to a film from 1984 that looks and feels more current in terms of tone, storytelling, and approach to genre. Yes, the hair, fashion, and visual effects date the film but, especially now that it looks this good in HD, nothing else. It’s a movie that would work today, which is not something that can be said about many movies from the creatively dark section of the mid-’80s. There’s a reason it has maintained a loyal fan base to support so many releases on DVD and Blu-ray. And this is the best one to date. (Note: All the special features were previously available, docking this specific release 0.5. It’s a 5-star film.)
