Here is the synopsis for “Sicario”:

An idealistic FBI agent is enlisted by an elected government task force to aid in the escalating war against drugs at the border area between the U.S. and Mexico.

Here are a few facts about Mexico’s drug war:

  1. The United States is the world’s largest consumer of illegal cocaine.
  2. An estimated 84 percent of the cocaine entering the United States passes through Central America and Mexico.
  3. From 2012 to 2013, reported kidnappings and extortions in Mexico rose by 25.7 percent and 29.1 percent, respectively.
  4. According to a survey by Mexico’s statistics agency INEGI, 94 percent of total crimes and 99 percent of kidnappings in Mexico went unreported or uninvestigated in 2013.
  5. The DEA reported a 324 percent increase in heroin seizures at the Mexican border between 2009 and 2013.
  6. As of 2014, the drug war has claimed more than 90,000 Mexican lives since it began in 2006.
  7. Between January 2000 and March 2015, 103 journalists were murdered and 25 disappeared.
  8. The National Human Rights Commission reported in 2014 that 89 percent of crimes against journalists in Mexico go unpunished.
  9. According to a 2010 U.S government report, between $19 to $29 billion enters Mexico from the United States due to U.S. drug sales.
  10. According to a 2011 report, official estimates suggest that drug trafficking activities account for 3 percent to 4 percent of Mexico’s more than $1 trillion GDP.
