Season Five will continue with “That’s Not What I Expected” (September 27th), a Hong Kong romantic comedy about a uptight hotel executive and a ragged sous chef. “Youth” (September 29th), a Chinese film right from its World Premiere the Toronto International Film Festival, features a performing art troupe who each face their own trials and tribulations after escaping a family scandal. “My Dad and Mr. Ito” (October 4th) is a Japanese comedy about a young woman and her much older boyfriend comfortably living together… until her father moves in. “Our Time will Come” (October 11th), is a narrative film about a Hong Kong guerilla unit in the 1940s. “Split” (November 1st) is a Korean comedy/drama dealing with the sport of bowling. “Teiichi-Battle of Supreme” (November 8th) is a mango inspired comedy satirizing Japan’s elitist paths to seats of power, by highlighting a high school student council president campaign. The Closing Night film will be “Bad Genius” (November 15th), a thriller from Thailand about lazy rich kids who coerce a genius high school student into cheating college entrance exams.
The Asian Pop-Up Cinema series – founded by Chicago film program veteran Sophia Wong Boccio – is a revolving showcase of diverse Asian films, with Hong Kong, China, Japan, Taiwan, South Korean, the Phillippines and Thailand all represented for the 2017 Fall Season, in films with English subtitles. Screenings occur at the AMC River East 21 in downtown Chicago, the Wilmette Theater in Wilmette, Illinois, and various locations for special free screenings (link to details below).
