The best film festivals in the world have the ability to transcend cinema and add to ongoing social and political discourse. Film festivals like Sundance, Telluride, Toronto, SXSW, and, of course, the Film Girl Film Festival. This modest film festival is the passion project of prolific Chicago film critic Andrea Thompson, who recognized the need for having more open and candid conversations about the disparate treatment of women in the industry.

With the help of the collaborative and supportive Milwaukee arts community, she founded the Film Girl Film Festival, which features not only female-led and -focused stories from around the world, but most importantly offers diverse and inclusive stories. This year, the film festival takes place on November 8th - 10th at The Underground Collaborative (61 W Wisconsin Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53203). There are incredible stories here, with topics about age, race, sexuality and all of their intersections.

Opening night includes film The Unlikely Story of the Lesbians of First Friday and short A Thousand Needles, followed by an opening night party at No Studios (with pizza!). Depending on how many of these incredible films and events you plan to attend, you may be better off getting the 3 Day Pass, which includes the opening night festivities, or the 2 Day Pass that includes the entire line up of films on Saturday and Sunday. You can also buy individual tickets to specifics films here.
