Subtitled (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not be Televised), it’s a true American cultural treasure that was discovered by director Ahmir Khalib “Questlove” Thompson (of the Tonight Show band “The Roots”), who put together footage from the 52-year-old (1969) Harlem Cultural Festival, AKA the “Black Woodstock,” which hasn’t seen the light of screen since it was filmed. He essentially combined these amazing musical acts – including 19-year-old Stevie Wonder, Sly and the Family Stone, The Fifth Dimension, young Gladys Knight and the Pips and Chicago’s The Staple Singers – with reminisces from the artists and attendees.

“Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not be Televised)” opens in theaters and streams on Hulu on July 2nd. Featuring Stevie Wonder, The Fifth Dimension, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Sly & the Family Stone and The Staple Singers. Directed by Ahmir Khalib “Questlove” Thompson. Rated “PG-13”
