The SXSW fest had origins in New York City in 1986, as it was suggested to a rock journalist in Austin, Texas, to extend a New Music Seminar that took place in NYC and make it “New Music Seminar Southwest.” That fell through, so the journalist (Roland Swanson of The Austin Chronicle) organized a local music festival in 1987 with co-founders Lewis Black and Nick Barbaro. Black came up with the South by Southwest moniker, a take-off on Alfred Hitchcock film title “North by Northwest.”
