On-Air Film Review: Eggers Regards Shakespeare in ‘The Northman’



CHICAGO – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on WBGR-FM (Monroe, Wisconsin) on April 21st, reviewing “The Northman,” an adaptation of the legend that inspired Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” by visionary writer/director Robert Eggers. In theaters April 22nd.

King Aurvandill (Ethan Hawke) returns to his Irish Coast Kingdom and reunites with his Queen (Nicole Kidman). The prince is Amieth (eventually portrayed by Alexander Skarsgard), and as a child witnesses his father’s murder by the king’s brother Joinier (Claes Bang). The murder is part of a coup, and Joinier even marries the Queen and sires another heir with her. With Amieth completely cut out, he escapes the Kingdom but vows revenge.
