Theater News: 5th Chicago Intl. Puppet Fest Through Jan. 29th, 2023
CHICAGO – Call me an Ismael puppet. We’ll never know if that was the opening line Herman Melville intended for his classic “Moby Dick,” but the 5th Chicago International Puppet Festival presents their Opening Night marionette version on January 18th, 2023 (7:30p), and the fest runs through January 29th. For tickets and info, click 5TH PUPPET FEST.
This year, the 12-day Chicago Puppet Festival features contemporary puppet acts and artists from ten countries - Brazil, Canada, Czechia, Finland, France, Norway, Japan, South Africa, Spain and the United States - namely New York, Boston and, of course, Chicago.

Herman Melville’s monster work of literature is also a monster in puppetry experience. In this Chicago premiere – direct from France and Norway – the show features seven actors, 50 puppets, video projections on smoke, an octobass, and a whale-sized whale. This all produces a dizzying dive into the inexplicable mysteries of life both through Melville´s irresistible narrative, and the incredible artistry of the puppetry troupe Plexus Polaire.
The Chicago International Puppet Festival was founded to establish Chicago as a center for the advancement of the art of puppetry. The citywide fest returns or the first time as an annual event in 2023, showcasing an entertaining and eclectic array of puppet styles, at venues large and small throughout the city, including the historic Fine Arts Building downtown and the Chopin Theatre in the Wicker Park neighborhood (see website for specifics).
