DVD Review: Detailed Featurettes Round Out Set For ‘Blue Bloods: The Second Season’

Blue Bloods, Tom Selleck

CHICAGO – Honestly, most special features on DVD-only season releases for shows that don’t have gigantic followings are pure filler. They’re typically made up of the talking-head footage that a network uses to sell a show to publicists or advertisers and offer little insight into the series. That’s why it’s nice to see a show like “Blue Bloods,” a modest hit but far from a big one, get some strong supporting material for its diehard fans.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Person of Interest: The Complete First Season’ Offers Every Way to Watch

Person of Interest

CHICAGOJ.J. Abrams and the team at Bad Robot are debuting their latest attempt at TV dominance tonight when “Revolution” debuts on NBC but their previous hit just came out on Blu-ray and DVD in “Person of Interest: The Complete First Season,” a modest Blu-ray/DVD/Digital combo set that lacks in bonus material but certainly offers fans a variety of ways to watch their favorite show.

DVD Review: Emmy-Nominated Third Season of CBS’s ‘The Good Wife’

The Good Wife S3

CHICAGO – Whenever a TV critic argues that network TV drama is dead and that it’s all moved to basic cable, there’s usually a solitary show that they point to as the exception — CBS’s “The Good Wife.” This critical darling, an Emmy winner for Best Actress in Dramatic Series last year (and Supporting Actress the year before and multiple nominee for this season), was recently released in a modest third-season DVD set from CBS and Paramount. It’s disappointing that the show isn’t available in HD and the special features are pretty light for what is arguably network TV’s best remaining drama.

Blu-ray Review: ‘The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Fifth Season’

The Big Bang Theory

CHICAGO – I don’t think even the people who made it thought that “The Big Bang Theory,” which recently had its fifth season released on Blu-ray and DVD, would be such a massive success. And it shows no signs of slowing down. Since the comedy debuted in 2007, it has doubled its viewership, averaging almost 16 million viewers a week in its fifth season, making it easily one of the top ten shows of the year. And Jim Parsons is the odds-on favorite to win a third straight Emmy for Best Actor in a Comedy Series next weekend.

Blu-ray Review: Strong Actresses Carry First Season of ‘2 Broke Girls’

2 Broke Girls

CHICAGOCBS’s “2 Broke Girls,” which recently had its first season released on Blu-ray and DVD courtesy of Warner Bros., isn’t about to break the mold of TV comedy. There are some sitcoms that try something new and there are others that merely fit a pattern. There’s nothing wrong with that. We’ve had buddy comedies since they started making sitcoms and while “2 Broke Girls” may be little more than a “Laverne & Shirley” update, it is well-done enough to make its familiarity easy to overlook.

DVD Review: Mediocre Release For Reboot Season of ‘Two and a Half Men’

Two and a Half Men Kutcher

CHICAGO – It’s funny that after all of the build-up, all of the headlines, and all of the hype that the ninth season of “Two and a Half Men” proved to be so lackluster.

TV Feature: The 10 Most Promising New Shows of Fall 2012

CHICAGO – The 2010-11 season was a very interesting one for network television. After a few years of undeniable failure, most of the networks found at least one new notable hit. FOX is building an entire night of comedy around Emmy-nominated breakout “New Girl.” ABC is ecstatic over the loyal followings for “Revenge” & “Once Upon a Time” (and “Suburgatory” has the potential to truly breakout in its sophomore season).
